Bad Competative Analysis and Keyword Prominence Vs. Stuffing - Unknown Secrets of SEO E-Webstyle Number 14
In this episode we discuss how not to do a website competitive analysis. We also discuss the importance of keyword prominence to SEO, keyword…
Use metatags.org to audit meta tags and keyworddensity.com to compare keyword density against top-ranking competitors, helping identify gaps in title, description, and keyword tags that hurt search rankings.
the sale begins at the search result
We answer these great questions. What does keyword density mean? Which meta tags are important? How do I use a keyword density tool? What is the difference between a keyword density tool and a keyword selector tool? Which are the Meta Tags that are important for Google.
A keyword density tool like keyworddensity.com shows how often a keyword appears relative to total words in your title, meta description, meta keywords, and visible text. You compare your page against a competitor ranking on page one to find where your keyword usage falls short.
According to this episode, search engines focus primarily on the keywords tag, the description tag, and the title tag. The title tag carries significant weight in rankings and also appears in the browser bar, while the description tag often controls what searchers see in results.
A stop word is a common word that most search engines ignore. In this episode, the word 'it' was flagged as a stop word inside a keyword tag, meaning 'IT' as in Information Technology was being read as the word 'it' and ignored, which the metatags.org tool caught automatically.
Cloaking means your server detects when a search engine bot visits and serves it a different version of the page than regular visitors see. Google can detect this and will ban your website, and according to this episode, getting unbanned is not easy.
A meta tag is a, a meta tag, you may read it as meta information, is information that's behind the scenes on your website that's going to be read not by a visitor but by a search engine robot or a Google bot or a spider bot, whatever you want to call it.

Hi, and welcome to the E-WebStyle Unknown Secrets of SEO Podcast. Hi, thanks for joining the podcast. You always start. You don't always say, all right, you ready? Do we need like a countdown or something? I'm like in mid-text, like whoa, whoa, all right, all right, all right. Text you later in the middle of podcast. My name is Chris Burris, owner of E-WebStyle. And this is Paul Hanson, sales manager of E-WebStyle. Thank you guys for listening. We've got another amazing podcast lined up for you. And then next week, remember what we were talking about earlier? It looks like next week we're going to be doing an interview. Yes, and thanks for the request. Thanks for all the feedback. We're going to have a great interview of which company? Well, his name is Joe Orsak, and he is the director of marketing of a company called Improve My Credit USA. So if you have bad credit, you definitely need to listen to this podcast. And we're going to give a, I've already glanced at his website. He's totally open. He's a high-energy guy. He's going to have lots of really valuable information. And you'll actually get to see how we analyze a company and look at a company from day one. Because he's not using our services. He may or may not use our services. And that's okay. But what we're going to do is tell him what we would do for his website. So that's going to be really exciting. Yes, and if you want to be the next interviewee or whatever of our podcast, send us an email. Let us know. We love having people on the show. Yes. The podcast. On the podcast. On the show. Yes. On the show. Okay. Send us an email at podcast at e-webstyle.com. And since you're handing out contact information, remember to follow us on Twitter. That's twitter.com slash e-webstyle. There is no dash in that one. So it's not e-webstyle. It's twitter.com slash e-webstyle. We also just added a quick link. We do have a Facebook page.
If you go to e-webstyle.com slash Facebook, that will automatically reroute you to our Facebook page. Our page on Facebook. That's very cool. That's exciting. You know, this podcast is the Indoctrination Podcast. Oh, because we are indoctrinating our youth. Our youth today. Our youth, yes. Since Obama has decided to go directly to our children. Hang on, hang on. You've got to start from the beginning. Because all the people not in the U.S. might not understand. Oh, yeah. That's true. So the President of the United States, and this isn't the first time in history. Apparently it's close. Second, third time in history. Is going to address directly the children of the United States. And, you know, this is, you know, my first thought is great. The President should be interested. You know, children should be motivated by the President. My next thought is, because of all this right-wing information that I get, oh, he's going to turn this into a North Korean and indoctrinate our children to whatever policy he wants, specifically health care. Yeah. And then I come back and he's like, you know what? The bottom line is, it only matters what he has to say. Right? If he's out there, don't do drugs. Or, you know, or if you do, don't inhale. Like another President. Like other Democratic Presidents. Or, you know, stay in school. Don't fight. Treat your teachers with respect. All that stuff. Which is, I believe, what he's going to do. I think it's actually a really good thing. Because, you know, children have respect for the President, of course, as they should. No matter what his political views are. And if he's got a good, strong, powerful message that's nonpartisan, great. Hand it out there. That's great. Everyone else seems to be going nuts about him indoctrinating our children. Yeah, people are making a big stink about it. And I'm like, slow down, people. I mean, he is our President. Whether you agree with him or not, he is our President. Come on. So let him screw up first and
then give him a hard time. And then you can ream him all you want. Because he should not be indoctrinating our children. And I was thinking, Paul, if we had this one opportunity to indoctrinate our podcast fans, and we wanted them to do certain things, what would those things be? I'd say you need to pick up the telephone, and you need to dial our telephone number. And that phone number is? 713. 592. What is this, Beavis and Butthead? 6724. One more time. 713-592-6724. The other thing I think they should do is follow us on Twitter. We already covered that. And I think you should grab your wallet, and you should mail me a check. Made out to Chris Burris. Man, if you don't include that. You're going to steal my thunder here? No, you get the check. It's made out to me. I get a check, and I hand it to you. That works. So follow us on Twitter, follow us on Facebook, send us an email. Remember, we still have our free website analysis out there, so find it on our website. You can find it on our search engine optimization page. You can find it on our web design and development page. And let me give a special shout-out to someone who sent one, Paul Cleverly of Contract Hire. You can see his website at contracthire-audi.co.uk. He sent us a request to take a look at his website. So thanks, Paul. We really appreciate it. I am working on that. You will have it shortly. Hopefully, by the time this podcast comes out, I would imagine. I better have it, or I'm going to be in trouble with Paul. And thanks to everyone who, and I don't understand why we get all of these requests, because we got one a couple days ago, from every country other than our own. I think out of all the ones we've gotten, I'd say 10% of the ones we get are from the U.S. From the U.S. So thanks to everybody who listens in Europe, and
Costa Rica, and Canada, and Switzerland, and Sweden. Excellent, yeah. The international podcast. It's Africa. Where are you? We need some from Africa. Send something from Africa. By the way, I think they got a new main fiber-optic cable into Africa, so we should start getting some major listeners. That would be awesome. As soon as they plug that in, boom. All right, that's awesome. We're going to have it come in. Last time on our website, we talked about, what did we talk about? We talked about a whole bunch of things. We talked about how to get banned from Google. Yep, exactly how to get banned from Google. So you want to go back and listen to that previous podcast. We talked about redirects and the importance of redirects and different kinds of redirects. One of the things that's important, and there are two kind of fundamentally different redirects. One of the things that's important is if you've got what's called Google Juice on one page and you're going to change the name of the page, you want to use the right kind of redirect to make sure that Google Juice follows that redirect. So you don't want to lose all the value that you have on the old page. What is the name of that kind of redirect? It's a 301 redirect. And you want to know how to implement that? You want to know how to do it? Go back and listen to our previous podcast. That is podcast 26. This is podcast 27. Wow, we've been at this 27 times since January. Awesome. That is indeed awesome. I'm excited. All right. So have we covered all our basics? Yeah, I think we're good. What's on the agenda for today? Analyzer tools. Okay, so we're giving out free stuff. Free information, free things to help you. What we're going to do is kind of show you how we use these analyzer tools around here. A while back, and I can't tell you which podcast it was, we went over Google's keyword selector tool. And so go
back and find that, and that's a great podcast. You want to listen to it? It's awesome. But this time we're going to talk about two different analyzer tools. One of them is a keyword analyzer tool, and the other is a meta tag analyzer tool. Paul? I love these tools. These suckers are great. And to jump back to the keyword selector tool, you should be using it. Everyone should be using it. If you have a website and you're trying to write content for it, it'll help you find that. And then, because I use it. Well, just, it pointed out something really important just this week. You were comparing one of our clients to another one of our clients, and we got some kind of counterintuitive information. Remember that? That was regarding APM, one of our new clients. Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. And Start Smart. And Start Smart. And Start Smart is looking to do online counseling, which kind of intuitively, we're like, okay, how many people are really interested in online counseling? We didn't know the market size. Huge numbers for online, huge searches and queries for online counseling. That was news to me. I didn't know that. And it was more than our other client who we thought was a shoe-in. Yes, it really was. Those tools are really very useful. Do go back and understand how to use those tools and how we use those tools. Go back and listen to our previous podcast. I am sorry. I don't know what it is. Fifteen, why not? Yeah. Yeah. It works. Fifteen-ish. It's in the teens. So we're going to look at the keyword analyzer tool and the other one, meta tag analyzer tool. And, Paul, for all those people, excuse me, people who don't know, what is a meta tag? A meta tag is a, a meta tag, you may read it as meta information, is information that's behind the scenes on your website that's going to be read not by a visitor but by a search engine robot or a Google bot
or a spider bot, whatever you want to call it. Sorry about that. I was just making sure we don't get a call. So a search engine is going to read that stuff, and that meta information tells the Google bot or whatever information about your website. It can tell them information about your keywords, about the description of that particular page, about the title of that page, the author of that page. I mean, there's, I think I've seen like 200 different meta tags. So that's what a meta tag is, and hopefully by now, everybody, if you've been listening, you probably should know that by now or probably do know that by now. And you're using it already. Yes. Another thing, meta tags, at least the description, is often what the search engines use when they're displaying results for a web page. So if you do have a meta tag description, that's a great time to control. Remember we talked about the sale begins at the search, right? And we talked about that a couple, At the search results. It was about five podcasts ago or so. Go back and make sure you're listening to our podcast because truly we believe that the sale begins at the search. As soon as you show up on the search results, of course, if you're with us, you're on the first page, you're probably in the top three positions, As soon as you show up on that search result, there's a short description under your link. That description often comes from the meta tag. That's your first opportunity to make a bigger impression than just being in the first results, right? That's when you get to say, You know, that's the difference. Like if you did a search for, you know, lawn chair repair, and the first description was we sell lawn chairs, and the second one description was we repair lawn chairs, which one are you going to click? Bang, I'm right there. He repairs lawn chairs. Even though the guy's on the first
position, you understand, you don't, you're not sure that he repairs lawn chairs, number two position, you know he does. So the sale begins at the search result. Go back and listen to that. So what we're going to do is we're actually going to do a little bit of online work here. You guys aren't going to be able to see that, but that's okay because we're incredibly good at describing what we're looking at. And which tool are we going to take a look at first? The one right here. Okay, so everybody go to the one right here. There's probably a website, the one right here.com. Metatags.org is what we're using first, and we're going to look at our own, and I just pulled this up. In fact, Paul, I've got to be honest. What's that? When you said we were going to look at this, you know, Metatag Analyzer tool and keyword, I was thinking, you know, we're not going to get any valuable information for eWebStyle. We're too good at that. Because we're just that awesome. That's what we are. Well, guess what? There is some good information. So we're going to do not just ours because there is good information there. We're also going to do another one of our new clients, APM. Yes, and if you're, take a look at this, you should be, you should run this on your own website. As soon as you finish listening to this, run this on your own website. You're going to get a lot of good information. Well, in fact, if you're actually sitting at your computer listening to this podcast, that's not a bad thing. Go to Metatags.org. That's M-E-T-A-T-A-G-S.org. And then over on the left, you'll see a free website analyzer. And then you can go down there and you can type in a website. I'm going to type in eWebStyle.com. And I'm going to click Analyze My Website. And there's some options here. What are spider bots, whatever. We just use the first one. It gives us all the information
that we need. And it does return some pretty good information. So if you're ever wondering, like, what kind of server a particular potential client of yours is on, or even what server your own is. And typically it's going to be either a Unix server or a Microsoft, an NT box. We are, of course, on a Microsoft IS 6.0 server. We get a status OK, which means our website's up. It comes in and it tells us, OK, here's our title meta tag. And it shows us what the title meta tag. For us, it's Web Design, Development, SEO, Houston, Texas. Description. And this is where it got a little bit interesting. It goes a little bit lower. But our description is Web Design, Development, and SEO for your website. IT Professionals for your business. And the thing that's interesting about it, and I would have never thought of this until I saw this, there's an error. Let's see, where is that error? As I scroll down here, it has meta tag advice. It says our title's good. There's no errors. It says our description's good. In our keywords, it says the keyword tag contains stop words. Uh-oh. Do you know what a stop word is? Ah, no, I don't know what a stop word is. That's not what it sounds like. A word that makes me want to stop. Yeah. It says the keywords, it, are stop words and are ignored by most engines. Now, let me go and read our thing again. Web Design, Development, and SEO for your website. IT Professionals for your business. Oh, okay. So, IT is interpreted by bots, potentially, as it. So, how would we change that? Information technology. Or, what about I dot, T dot? We could try that as well. Or information technology. That's cool. And, or we can throw it in specific quotes, in single quotes, so that hopefully it's rated differently. The thing is, is that I would have never known that without this tool. That's, that's pretty cool. That's an awesome tool. So, even if you
guys are killer rock star SEO people, and you don't need these stinking tools, go ahead and run your website through it, because you might find some, some interesting information. We, yeah, we definitely did, and I use this sucker now with, with clients. Instead of doing this by hand, which took me forever, I run this tool with clients, and, and, and look at, okay. And, one thing that I found on this sucker is it, it helped me understand, I think we went over this last podcast, a redirect. This tool helped me. We'll cover that here in just a second. Okay, okay. So, you were just talking about doing this by hand. How would you find a meta tag by hand? I would, hang on, I have to do this. Actually, on the computer. All right. I get my mouse, and I'm going to right click, and I'm going to scroll down to where. You're going to right click on the page? On the, yes, on, in the actual website, not on the banner image, or in, not on the background, in the actual HTML page itself. So, maybe some white space in the, somewhere on the website. And that's exactly what I look for, some white space with, near some text. I right click on it with my mouse, and you, depending on your browser, it might say view page source, or view source, or whatever. And that pulls up another window, usually, and it gives me the source code for the website. And I look for all the meta tags, and you can find them by meta name equals blank. And that blank could be title, keyword, description, author, content, blah, blah, blah. So, we're actually looking at the meta tags, physically looking at the meta tags for metatags.org, and the actual particular meta analyzer tool. And so, they've got keywords, description, revisit after, copyright, web copy date, web content type, web author. They've got all of these different meta tags that you can use. You don't have to use all of these, and, you
know, as many as you want to use, that's great. We tend to stay very focused on keywords, description. That's what we focus on. Because that's what the search engines focus on. Also, title is one. But title actually really isn't a meta tag. What is it? It's actually a real tag. It's like an HTML tag. So, it's interesting that they include title here. I just kind of noticed that. Because a title tag, when you're looking at your browser, the title is the thing in, say, the blue bar, if you're in a Windows machine. The blue bar across the browser that says the title. And in the old days, everyone used to put, you know, welcome to eWebStyles website. But we realized that Google and most of the search engines give a lot of credit to the information that is held in the title tag. So, not meta tag, title tag. So, you really start putting more relevant stuff like we are there. Our title tag is Web Design, Development, SEO, Houston, Texas. Yes. Instead of, you know, we don't really, the people who are going to search for eWebStyle in a search engine are going to find us easily. We're more interested in getting, you know, search results for people with Web Design, Development, or SEO and Houston, Texas. So, and even the people that don't even search for eWebStyle, the people who just search for SEO Houston can find us now. Yeah. Yeah, we're on the first page. We're on the first page. That's good. We are good at what we do. That's right. I think, isn't the sign in the hall, say, world-class experts at SEO? Yeah, it does. It definitely does. Cool. I like that. Excellent. So, do we want to go on, yeah, let's go on to the, the, this. We'll go on to Dents. And, oh, and here's another thing. You can, and I just realized this recently, when I would go use this tool, I would type in the homepage. You can actually type in for every page. An individual
page. You can check for every, and I'd say go check every single page of your website, not just your homepage. Yep. Because it took me probably two weeks of using this to figure that out. And make sure, you know, one of the things that you want to make sure is your description and title tag and keyword tags should not be the same on every page. Shouldn't be the same. Because each page is really, should be tied to, you know, targeting something different. Where your homepage actually might, you might want the name of your business and your title tags because that's what that page is about. Your services page or your products page or your, you know, whatever it may be page is going to be about the particular services or products on those pages. So, if your homepage was, you know, eWebStyle.com, welcome to eWebStyle.com website, and then you go to the SEO page, it shouldn't be welcome to eWebStyle.com website. It should be SEO, Houston, or SEO, whatever your targeted keywords are. Or Paul is great or something along that line. Make the checks out to Chris. Well, let's go ahead and do an analysis. We just picked up, well, we've been doing their website and their IT work here in Houston for quite some time. The company is APM-USA.com. It's APM Metals, American Precious Metals. And so, we did, we used this same metatags.org keyword metatag analyzer tool on their website, which is APM-USA.com. I think I said that already. All right. So, we won't repeat that again. No? Okay. And what you'll notice is there are no metatags. Oh, there's a lot of red on that page. Our web design and development division focuses exclusively on, and here's how we like to phrase that. We like to provide a website that represents the quality of service that our customers give to their customers. Right? So, we focus on that. We focus on the graphics. We focus on the text. We focus on the ease of use, and we create these beautiful, very
useful, and customized websites for our clients. Then, when our clients are interested in search engine optimization, we rework the details of the behind-the-scenes details of the website. Sometimes the text on the front page, but we rework the behind-the-scene details. And, obviously, the inbound links. Those are very, very important. So, you look at APM-USA.com. There's no metatag. There's no keywords. There's no, well, it says that the title relevance to the page content is horrible because the title says APM-USA American Precious Metals, and probably there's none of that text on the homepage. So, none of this is surprising because we haven't started doing SEO for them yet. Here's what Paul was talking about. This is the red one that you're like, what? Oh, there we go. What? After the title, description, keywords, robots, and author tags, it gives you the webpage analysis. And the first thing that comes up, it says, found webpage with a redirect. And when I first saw this a while back, I'm like, so? I'm like, all right, what's the problem? And we went over this last podcast. Certain redirects aren't good, and this website had the redirect that they didn't want to see, so we had to go in and change it. So, we will be changing it. Clearly, we haven't changed it yet. Oh. Well, it just came up, but we will be changing that for sure. Yeah, because the default page is default.htm. I'm sure that's redirecting to, like, default.asp or something along those lines. That's just how we used to do it. As soon as we start doing SEO, we get those things fixed up. Let's see, what else do we have here? And that's kind of it that I see here. It does say, how will your website appear in the search engines, although it doesn't seem to really have any good information there, at least for APM USA. And that's probably a reflection of the fact that there's no description. So, it's going to appear. In fact, let's look at how eWebStyle would appear. Yeah, there we
go. So, for eWebStyle, it does look right. It says, web design, development, and SEO for your website. IT professionals for your business. So, that's how we would show up on the search engine when we show up on the first page. There you go. And it comes directly from our description tag, correct? Yep. Exactly. So, everybody, if you don't do anything, go back and write your description tag. That's your first pitch. Most important, make sure your title tag is relevant to the keywords that you want to find there. And that your description is your first opportunity to sell. So, make sure that your meta tag, description tag, is a nice little short sales pitch. There you go. So, everybody, go get your meta tag on. All right. On that note. You can't have my, you can't let me have my one corny joke. I mean, come on, let me have that. I need that. You got it. I'm just going to leave you out to dry on it. I don't got your back on that one. All right. Now, let's get our keyword density on. Oh, no, please make it stop. Please do not include this in your doctrination. All right. So, yeah. So, now we're going to look at this keyword analyzer tool. And this one is keyworddensity.com. It's a nice little tool. It's actually a really good way. So, can you think of any reason why you would want to compare the keyword density of one site to another? I can think of an excellent reason. The first thing that comes to my mind is, okay, I am Joe the Plumber, and I'm not on the first page of Google, but John the Plumber is on the first page of Google, first position. Let me see what he's doing right to get on that first page, and let me figure that out. So, that's the first thing that comes to mind. Let me just look at John the Plumber, and let me see what he's got going on, because obviously everybody knows that keywords
are very, very important in terms of your search engine positioning. So, that's what I would think of. Okay, maybe I don't have enough keywords. Let me take a look at that. Anything else? Another reason why I would want to look at one keyword, one URL's keywords over another? It's a trick question. Yes, but I'm going to save my answer. I'm going to wait until you give yours and see if yours matches mine. I don't have any other answer. Your first one was perfect. Dang it. I was just going to say, yeah, what you said. That's exactly what I was going to say. Yeah, that is the reason. If you're not on the first page, it is about keyword information and keyword density analysis. Now, what is keyword density? It seems logical, but how would you describe keyword density? I'd say maybe like how, I hate to use the same word, but how dense, take your text, how dense are the keywords, and that's not what I'm getting. How many keywords are in your text? In relationship to the quantity of text, yeah. How keyword dense is your text. We're on keyword density.com. We've typed in our search engine marketing page into URL one. There's actually three fields. We typed in marketingtips.com because they show up real well for internet marketing. We typed in keyword and key phrase of internet marketing. We clicked analyze keyword density. This lightning fast website returned some really, really good information. It actually breaks it down. If you look right in the middle, if you're doing two of them, you'll have the results. In our case, marketingtips.com is on the left. Our website is on the right. Right down the middle, you've got HTML, title, meta description, meta keywords, visible text. We're going to look at eWebStyle here for a second. The title, it says that there's one keyword, there's seven total words, so that's a keyword density of 28.57%. For marketing tips, there's actually no keyword in the title. That's very interesting. For meta description, on us, we've got zero
keywords and we've got eight total words, so that's obviously a keyword density of 0%. That's one place where we would want to improve. And the reason, you know, probably the words just got juxtapositioned, so maybe we've got marketing, internet, or internet marketing. We just left out internet marketing as one of the, in the description that's not in there. In fact, we were just talking, well, that's another page. We were talking about what our description was. The description is going to be different on this page. Meta keywords. So this is your meta tag, your keyword description tag, and we've got the keyword once out of seven keywords, so that's, again, 28.57%. Visible text, and this goes on and on. So for us, our visible text, we have 734 total words, and of those, five of them are our keyword set. That gives us a density of 1.36%. Well, five of them are that particular one keyword, right? Yes. Search engine marketing. Yes. Okay. So we could, in this case, it's actually internet marketing. Internet marketing. Yeah. Excuse me. So this is interesting, because you'll notice that, well, what we're seeing here is for marketingtips.com, there's not, and I know this is getting a little dry, and we're really sorry about this. We wanted to go over a little bit of it. Kind of fundamentally what it's saying is, for each of the pieces of information in the middle, title, meta description, meta keywords, visible text, it tells you how many times does that keyword appear, and then it tells you the total number of words, and then it tells you the keyword density. So this is probably not a great example. I would imagine that marketingtips.com has really strong inbound links, because they're actually not very strong for internet marketing. They don't have keywords in the title. They don't have keywords in the description. They don't have keywords in their keywords. What is their problem? Well, and it's specifically the internet marketing keywords. So the reason that they're probably doing really well is because they've had
lots of links out in the web somewhere that say internet marketing and link back to marketingtips.com. Or they could have, they could be going after a different keyword. Yes. They could be going after... But they do show up in, like, position two for internet marketing. Oh, wow. What the... Yeah. So it is a little odd. And the other explanation potential, I'm not trying to throw them under the bus or anything. It is also possible that they're doing what's called cloaking, which means for search engine... I'm not saying they are. This is just maybe a little kind of diversion into cloaking. We don't have much time here, but cloaking is when you have code on your website, on your server, that understands when Google is looking for the web page. And when it sees that Google or one of the other search engines is looking for the web page, it gives one version of the web page. And when it knows that Google isn't looking, it gives you another version of the web page. Which, obviously, we're not Google, so it's going to be giving us the version that Google wouldn't see if they were cloaking. I'm not saying that they are cloaking. So that's something... By the way, don't go look for cloaking services. Don't click for cloaking. If you get caught cloaking, Google will ban your website. Google will get banned. And from my understanding, we've never had a client get banned. But to my understanding, it is not easy to get unbanned or to get out of whatever box they put you in. Yeah. So don't do that. Yeah, don't do that. Bad plan. Yeah. Well, we've actually covered all our time. We've covered both the Keyword Analyzer Tool and the MetaTag Analyzer Tool. Remember to send us emails at podcast at e-webstyle.com. Start following us on Twitter. That's where we keep people up to date. We'll post new clients.
