About this episode

Discover 10 ways to go beyond the old 10 blue links and get more traffic from Google's enhanced organic search results.

Questions this episode answers

What is position zero in Google search?

Position zero refers to featured snippets, which are enhanced answers that appear at the top of search results, sometimes even above paid results. They typically display about 50 words of text, a page title, a URL, and a featured image thumbnail.

How do you optimize content for Google featured snippets?

Answer informational queries relevant to your business in a concise paragraph format. Research what questions people are asking, identify gaps where no snippet appears or existing results are low quality, and write a single paragraph that directly and specifically answers the target question.

Why is it harder than ever to rank organically in Google today?

The hosts cite three main reasons: the algorithm has grown significantly more complex, online competition has increased, and 75% of all searches are now unique, meaning people use search engines in new and varied ways that are harder to target with traditional SEO.

In their words

Hi, and welcome to the SEO podcast, Unknown Secrets of Internet Marketing. My name is Chris Burrows, one of the owners of EWR Digital. And my name is Matt Bertram, your lead strategist for today. We're going to be going through the 10 different ways to organically get to page one in the Google rankings today, Chris. Yes. And do you have any short diatribe you could go on and I could fix the camera a little bit or you just want to use it? I think I can. I think we just people you want people to see us better is what you're saying. Yes. And I think we can. I think we can do it easy. OK. That you just need to talk for a little bit. So you want me to talk. Just talk. I don't know if that's something that I can really do very well, Chris. I talk like quite a bit here. You know, what's really cool is we got the headphones working so I can hear myself in my ears talking through the speaker. And oh, that's cool. See, hey, guys, what's going on? Yeah. Hey, for anybody. Oh, no, we're good. Did we zoom in? We did not zoom in because it looks closer. We had to change the laptop at the last minute. We probably could switch back now. But and we're under a time crunch. It's close to. Well, it's close to freezing. It's close to freezing. The reality is I was going to say it's close to Christmas. And that's not untrue and is irrelevant to why we have to leave because like it's Houston. And when things freeze, like it's getting crazy, you go home. Well, you know, really our podcast. Right. And and we thank you for everybody that is watching us on YouTube. Yes. Subscribe, follow, click the notification. That's right. Yeah. But most people, almost all people are listening to us. And and the quality of the sound, Chris, is so good. It's much better than it's been in the past. So people could complain

that the camera's too far away, which I actually could solve this. Watch. All right. You solve this. I'm going to start talking about this. I'm not going to talk about the article first because we got to talk about our sponsor. We've got SE ranking. You can see what it looks like right there. You can see if that's close enough. I would go closer. I'd go a lot closer. Maybe not because now now you can't. Can you get both chairs? Yes. SE ranking is our sponsor. They are an SEO tool. They're good and they're inexpensive. They're professional and easy to use. They have lots of tools, lots of tools. And and all of them could be sold on their own. You might not have heard of SE ranking. I mean, you have if you've been listening to the podcast, but you might not have heard of SE ranking. But they've actually won lots of awards and accolades from users. And, you know, we got you guys a 30 day trial. So it's not it's not a 14 day trial. That's that's normal. Like our listeners are not normal people at all. They get a 30 day trial. We can we can talk about that a little bit. Right. Because how abnormal our listeners are. Well, how overly educated and over technical. Oh, I like that. Our podcast listeners are on the whole. Everybody in our audience is straightening their their geeky tie. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I'm going to wear like a fake tie T-shirt. No, I think that the people that listen to our podcast from what the feedback's been in the podcast community from people that I'm associated with is that we go into a lot more detail and we're much more technical than than than a lot of other podcasts out there. And so I think the people that listen to us are like that cut above. So not unlike our service, a lot more technical, a lot more professional. Yeah. A lot more cutting edge. Yeah. I like it. I like it. Yeah.

Well, hey, that cheers to you guys being technical and experts out there listening to this podcast. Go check out SE ranking and to get there and to take advantage of that 30 day free trial. Just go to bestseopodcast.com forward slash SE ranking and sign up and enjoy your 30 day trial. Yeah. Yeah. It's in our show notes. So you can check it out on YouTube. Go check out YouTube. Please like us for us. We're trying to build following there and on LinkedIn right now. And then our TikTok is going a little crazy. Matt, you know what else is in our show notes? What's else in our show notes? A link to where they could leave us a review. That's true. And if possible, if possible, we would like them to make that review five stars. It feels good to be in the same room and actually doing that synchronously. All right. Let's jump into this article because we do need to run 10 different ways to get organic page one Google rankings. This is by Miranda Miller. Patiff to you, Miranda. Awesome article. Google search has been continually evolving since the very beginning. Yes. You guys may remember the algorithm cataclysm. If you don't, you should go back and listen to some older podcast. That's probably like three years old now or something. And what I will say is that a lot of the conceptual things that we talk about in the old podcast are as relevant today as before. I know everybody's like, well, I need to listen to the most current thing. And you should. And you should. But the fundamentals have not changed. Like they've built upon the algorithm. They've changed some stuff down. There's the eat, eat, eat, right? Yep. But the, you know, by the way, go listen to the last podcast. If you're wondering what he eat is, you may know what eat is, but if you don't know what eat is. Yeah. But you know, it is still valuable. They just kind of added a little bit. So

if you're binging on podcasts, uh, our old podcasts are fantastic. Yep. Yep. So here are 10 opportunities for more traffic from Google and how you can get it with the introduction of knowledge panels in 2012, followed by featured snippets in 2014, not to mention the local search pack that preceded those optimizing for 10 blue links has just become a thing from the past. Like you're just no longer optimizing for those 10 blue links, right? It's true. In this post, we're going to explore the different ways you can appear on Google's page one. Now there are four key core types of rich search results that you want to go after. One of them is rich results. That's kind of redemptive, but it is Richard. Yep. Featured snippets. What's next? Knowledge panel, knowledge panel. That's right. With enthusiasm. The last one, the GMB, but GBP and local business profile, local business results. Yes. Um, so real quick, rich results are enhanced organic search results that adds information to a plain text search result and expands it as a result. He gave the example of looking up cookie recipes and showing a picture of some cookies showing, Hey, this recipe takes about an hour and 25 minutes to do. Uh, it uses crunchy peanut butter, brown sugar, eggs, and that's in the result, right? So that's an example to our audience. Maybe, maybe right now with Christmas. Well, maybe Miranda was preparing for the holidays when she wrote this back in April 21st of 20. No. Um, next is featured snippets. They are enhanced answers that appear at the top of search results, sometimes even above paid results. That doesn't happen very often. Uh, and sometimes referred to as position zero. So I'm, I'm, I'm using position zero a lot. Yeah. And, um, you know, a lot of people were fearful of position zero because they would think that you wouldn't have to click through to the link. Yeah. But if, but I've found, okay, if I'm looking for a specific answer, boom, it gives me the specific

answer. I do like that. Yep. But a lot of times they might look for that specific answer and then I need to expound further on whatever I'm researching on. And I do click through to that link. So, so I do think that the amount of links, uh, that you're getting from it are getting cut down, but there is still a lot of reasons to be in that position zero to get that click through. I would suggest that the ones that you're not getting click throughs were probably not going to convert anyway. Right. So I find when I use this, um, rich snippet, I actually, it's like, Hey, you're having the debate with somebody about whatever, some statistic, the meaning, something, whatever. And somebody in the group, usually me says, if only there was a device that we could pick up and had access to all the information around the planet, and we could stop arguing about this and actually confirm the result. I've never heard you say that. You've never heard me say that. I've never heard you say that, but I like it. It's pretty good. Right. If, if only that device existed. Uh, and really I usually say, and could prove me right. And we're a cyborg. Um, and, and then you like read the first sentence and that's got enough information in it. Uh, that was never going to turn into a sale. That was never going to turn into a lead. That was never going to happen. Now, if there is something that I really want to dig into and that comes up, I'm clicking through, like you're, you're clicking through. That's not enough. Um, this results, it typically answers an informational query and may include text, a numbered or non numbered list, maybe some images, maybe some information from multiple sites. Next is knowledge panels. These are information panels about what is generally referred to as entities. What are entities you ask? What are entities? Well, entities are like people, places, organization, movies, music, and other things. Knowledge panels provide

quick information about entities that are automatically generated. Yeah. And finally, we have your favorite. It's your favorite. I know they're my favorite business profile. I, you know, we're, you know, you're, you're a little tongue in cheek with this, but I've been doing so much like local SEO lately. Like we have a whole team now dedicated to, to local search, uh, for, for enterprise brick and mortar brands. Um, and it's really powerful. 30% roughly of all traffic on Google goes through those, uh, GMB listings. Yeah. I'm sorry. GBP listings. Uh, put a quarter in. Yep. Uh, Google business profile, formerly known as Google. My business is a Google program that allows local based businesses to manage their online presence. Whenever someone searches for their business, a local product or a local service. Yeah. The factors that weigh heavily into getting you one of these listings, one of any of these listings, relevancy to the query, vertical industrial segment or categories such as flights, hotels, restaurants, correct use of structured data, right? If Google can't understand what you're presenting to them in an easy way, then they're going to skip you. And then content quality. Now here are 10 ways, by the way, we're going to break this into two podcasts. So we're only going to cover four because we've already kind of covered this base. Here are four ways, uh, four of the 10 ways to get, uh, get more page one and position one, or even the coveted position zero results in Google. Okay. Number one is plain text, organic search results. Achieving the top plain text, organic search results in Google is more difficult than ever before. Uh, 10 blue links. You know, those essentially don't exist anymore on mobile devices. Ultimate scroll. Right. Yeah. What it's called? Unlimited scroll. It's not, is it called unlimited scroll? Well, no infinity scroll is something else. They called it something else where it's like scroll a lot, like, like scroll a lot, yeah. That's the French version. I think it's like something like the first seven

pages on Google is like, just scroll. Yeah. So it's not infinity scroll. It's like, and I, and you mentioned it probably either the last podcast or the podcast before. And I hadn't really noticed because you like the reality is you don't usually get to the bottom of the first page. Um, you usually get the results that you're looking for right there up top. Um, and then I had noticed it. So that's on both desktop and mobile versions now. Right. Yeah. Well, they, well, it's interesting. A lot of these searches, um, informational they're, they're trying to break down how you're searching and what you're looking for. And I think that the reason they did that is because of these updates to the algorithm. Like there's a lot of informational stuff coming up and I don't think it's keyed in perfectly with, with, with the search results. And so they're trying to show you a wider selection, which I think is good for everybody to have a little bit more diversity. So. Oh, and, and we started this with, um, uh, the search results, getting organic search results in Google is more difficult than ever before. Well, if you define page one as the first seven pages now, it just got a whole lot easier. Yeah. Why would you say, and I just have a thought myself, so putting you on the spot, why would you say it's more difficult today than even when we started working together and even, you know, 10 years before that? Like, yeah. So, so I would tell you, um, certainly that is the viewpoint, uh, of a lot of other marketing agencies. They, uh, white label or outsource, uh, SEO, uh, many times. And you mean to other companies to other kinds of outsourcing. Yeah. Because it, it's constantly changing. You can't necessarily build a, a scalable business mall route without a lot of agility, right? Like, like a lot of you, you have to be very nimble in what you're doing, but there's so much more complexity to the search

engine. That's one. Um, there's, uh, so many more people online competing competition, right? I think if you come up with another one, I'll be impressed. I'm not saying I won't be, I'm already impressed. Like, let me just, I'll, I'll say that if you come up with another one, then you have until the end of, you have until point four. What was the question again? Why is it more, why is it more difficult than ever to get, uh, organic listings, high level organic listings? And you got, you got competition, right? And complexity. I mean, we're literally covering 10 points about like the old article that we would be covering is, Hey, let's talk about the 10 positions on the first page, right? Like now we're talking about 10 other ways to get on the first page and how to optimize for them. Yeah. Like this is significantly more complex. So complexity and, um, and competition. Well, I, I think also that the searches, um, are more unique. So people are using the search engines differently and 75% of all searches are new searches now. Um, I'm going to give that a, no, no, I'm going to give that a four and a half out of five. Uh, cause I think it was good. That's a good, that's a good answer. The two big sides, right? Or the complexity over here and the competition over here. And then you, you meet in the middle of there's different kinds of searches. You got 4.5. Um, now how to optimize for this first one, right? Just organic one answer a searcher's need for information. What are they asking? And you need to answer it. And number two, I love this be superior in every way. Seriously. That's what it takes. And I jotted down a note. Um, that's really kind of related to eat and go back and listen to the previous podcast, uh, for our discussion about eat. Number two is video rich results. Yes. YouTube results feature prominently in Google search results. Why is that? Because they

own them. Oh yeah. That's right. Google owns the second biggest search engine in on its own. Yeah. I think video is going to overtake tech search. Yeah, I think so. I mean, I, if you think about the evolution of the search result page and now they're actually videos on the result page, like this is a no brainer. Uh, Google organizes them into video rich results that are sometimes displayed above the regular text link results. And he gives a couple examples like how to cook with a walk, um, you know, relevant to our audience again, uh, how to optimize for this help searchers and search engines understand your videos content with relatively, excuse me, relevant quality titles, descriptions, and tags. Um, make sure those descriptions like there's, I don't remember, I don't think there's a character limitation. So you can put a lot of contact to give Google context about that video, but just only use up to what you need to describe what you're doing. Yeah. Like, yeah. Don't like don't dilute it. Yeah. You know, that gets it diluted. Um, and then just one trick. I always remember this. We actually had this guy on a, on a podcast. Can't remember the name of his name off the top of my head, uh, kind of a YouTube expert. And one of the things he did, he did some survey, um, and, and actually kind of research and dug into this. And if you use the word you early on in the video, it increased his views. And I think view length by like some 80%. And if he used it twice, it added like another 10%. They're like, you want to know this information. You are going to have your answer soon. I did not know that. Interesting. Yeah. That's pro tip. Uh, all right. Number three, the carousel rich results. So Google's documentation states that carousel rich results are available for four specific types of content. That's courses. Yeah. That's movies. Yeah. That's recipes and that's restaurants. Okay. How to optimize for it.

Like that just, that's what it is. And he shows the example of, uh, of, uh, market. What is that search? I can't even see. I don't know. It's a search and it's showing lots of pictures of old people in there. Yeah. Well, it's, it's authors of Victorian fiction. Okay. There you go. Yeah. That's a lot of people who are old, right? Nobody knew, uh, how to optimize for this. You got to go check out. This is kind of a lame response. Sorry. Go check out Google's markup requirements for all carousels. This is mostly related to markup. Make sure you're marking up the content properly. Yeah. And then there's a great scheme of tools out there. And, um, we we've spent a lot of time on that and they, they are super helpful and not everybody's using those. Yeah. So that's something technical. You, that's almost a pro tip because just use it. All right. So the last one that we'll be covering today of the 10 different ways to get organic page one, Google rankings is the featured snippet. No, I didn't do it. No, I thought that was good. I give that one of 4.8. Like that was good. Uh, a type of organic search result that displays approximately 50 words of text, the page title and URL and a featured image thumbnail. Now. Yeah. Right. This is, this is the, the search he gave is what are Google algorithms? That's actually relevant to our audience. And then it turns out that a search engine journal post comes up, uh, and, and the title is, you know, Google algorithm updates and changes a complete history. I love that page. Right. It's a good page, right? Yeah. Google algorithms are a complex system used to retrieve data from its search index and instantly deliver the best possible results for a query. That is actually a, that a snippet pulled out of the search engine journal article. And so it pastes it right there in the results. We've all seen those now. This gets a little

wordy here, but how to optimize for this particular position, right? Um, one answer informational queries relevant to your business and its products or services. So that's the first thing I'm trying to get back here, um, to keep this paragraph format and a simple Q and a approach in mind, as you create content, you hope to rank on this type of result. Cause if you look at the snippet that they gave, that snippet is just one paragraph. It answers the question. It's very concise. Keep that in mind as you're writing the content for that page. What we were talking earlier and we should have really recorded our lunch, all of our covers, the whole lunch. Yeah. And, uh, what were we talking about? Um, is it Ernest Hemingway or who, who was, who is the author? Uh, I think we'll go with Ernest Hemingway. Like, I think that's, I think that's as good as any talking about writing a letter. It's only there were some sort of device that we could hold in our hand and we could look up. Well, it was, it was, it was that quote that said, I, I would have, you know, my apologies. If I had more time, I would have written you a shorter letter. Right. And that's what we're talking about is writing something very, very concise. Yes. And why you were saying that. I don't think it's Ernest Hemingway, is it? Mark Twain. Mark Twain. I think it's Mark Twain. Yeah. I'm reasonably certain it's Mark Twain that, cause that's come up. Here's a partial list of attributions I have seen. Oh no, that's all over the place. So they've done research. Like, no, this is just kind of interesting. We're going down a rabbit hole. I know we don't have time, but don't worry. Uh, here's, so this, this author, um, quote investigator has said, here's the people that I've seen attribute. This has been attributed to Mark Twain, George Bernard Schwab, Voltaire, Blaise Pascal, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, um, Winston Churchill, Pliny, the younger Cato,

Cicero, Bill Clinton, and Benjamin Franklin. Oh, not yours. No, no, no, no. I think probably Mark Twain or, um, who was, uh, the, uh, prime minister of Britain. Who was that? Winston Churchill. Winston Churchill. It could have been him. Looks like Pascal. Okay. Yeah. Blaise Pascal, uh, math, uh, French mathematician and philosopher. That was kind of his first, uh, of course I didn't read the article thoroughly. Um, and what kind of result was that? Was that a, uh, what was a Google, uh, audio search? So, oh yeah, just a regular search. I had to click through. Ah, it wasn't, they, they, they probably haven't used the right schema. They don't have a snippet. Well, you were saying voice search. I remember old podcasts. You're like, voice search, not worth it. Yeah. You're doing it. Not for business. Yeah. Who's getting business out of that? Well, I mean, for restaurants, I would, I would say for restaurants, but the same search is probably more products. That was, that was my, my thought at the time. All right. And then finally, how to optimize for this Google snippet, right? For this, uh, it's snippet, right? Isn't that what we're doing? Featured snippet. Um, do the legwork of researching what questions people have and see what results come up. Are there opportunities where no result renders, um, are there results that seem low quality or outdated? Start there and use your learnings from those early efforts with the easiest opportunities to target more competitive search. That is like the definition of SEO in general. I think, yeah, I mean, that, that, that's a pretty good, like description of what you're doing with SEO in general, right? In general. Right. And then, and then maybe go back and refer to like, Hey, make sure it's got the paragraph format. Make sure that one paragraph asks that very specific answers that very particular, uh, question, and then you will be good to go. All right. That's it. This was, this was quick. This was good. I liked it. I thought

it was good. Yeah, we should keep it. We'll, we won't throw this recording away. We'll hope it's recording right now. Yeah. We just have our fingers across. Hey, remember do go out please. And, and check out our sponsor se ranking. Again, you can go to bestseopodcast.com forward slash se ranking and, uh, take advantage of that 30 day trial. And then, yeah, if, if you see us on social media, please support us, just like us, follow us, share us, whatever we're, we're trying to make a dedicated effort to grow right now or LinkedIn. Um, that's where we're focused. And really to give, I mean, what we, you know, we're like, Hey, we should grow these. And what we're like, well, how do we usually do that? We give value. And so we're giving value. So go value, value for value. Just like us. Yeah. Just like, share all that stuff. I'm not going to list those places. We'll do that next time. And, uh, we're really helping out a lot of value. It is busy. Um, I am, um, kind of moving out of that free consultation phase. Um, so if you want to get me, uh, before the end of the year, please reach out, uh, after that it is paid. Um, we have great representatives have been with us five plus years answering the phone, all very knowledgeable.
