Google now lets verified Google Places business owners publicly respond to reviews written by Google Maps users. The episode recommends responding to both positive and negative reviews. Business owners cannot respond to reviews pulled from third-party sources like Yelp or CitySearch, only to reviews written directly on Google.
The hosts recommend separate pages for each topic. Putting everything on one long page with anchor links dilutes inbound anchor text across subjects, making it harder for Google to understand what each piece of content is about. Individual pages allow focused link equity per topic.
content is becoming increasingly important okay yeah i understand that uh and things are changing it's uh links aren't necessarily as important as they used to be five years ago

the secrets of seo podcast what's up everybody welcome back to another fun-filled thursday edition of the seo pod unknown secrets of seo podcast also known as internet marketing unknown secrets of seo podcast because we realized at one point that internet marketing was actually a pretty valuable term so we decided to add that to our title uh and we're you know if you have any suggestions we'd be happy to adjust our title again this is is podcast number 70 uh you are listening to the most popular seo podcast on itunes man i'm disappointed i'm like i'm a little down today what is that yeah you know this is like two weeks in a row i've gone over to itunes like waiting to print out a review that we can talk about on air and no one's reviewing us oh man so you know go out there create an itunes account and uh i know there's a new visitor out there somewhere well speaking of that we actually have a listener in estonia which is a country and there's a city in estonia god we are america yeah i really am sorry about that estony and tolin is the city uh it seems like well at least everything i tend to look at and bring up on air it's right on the coast so it's you know it's beautiful city right on the coast uh hey listener in estonia excellent thank you send us some information you know some cool about estonia because i have no idea seriously i didn't even know that existed yeah until 30 seconds ago that's awesome did i ever tell you my jordan story like when i was in college i met a guy from jordan and at the time you know right out of high school americans don't know that jordan exists usually uh and but it was the time of air jordans so i literally thought the dude was messing with me right but i was also smart enough to know that i don't know shit about geography and and
so i just kept my mouth closed and i said i'll research this later uh because he seemed very serious you know if he if he was in fact messing with me he was he was a very good actor and uh it turns out he's a good friend of mine he is actually from there's a place called jordan and i'll tell you why that's funny wow i'm thinking that's funny is because when you said from jordan i knew jordan's a country but my first thing was air jordan he's like air jordan and i know it's a country i'm like wow this is the first thing that comes into my mind is air jordan that's like is that like avatar or they're like jordan's hanging in the air and people live in them oh man so we like to talk a little bit about what we talked about last time last time we did i don't even what are we we did uh we did something it was yeah it was one note i should have brought that you know i didn't even bring it it was it was actually a very good podcast it was a tool it was another it was something that i found that i thought was just awesome like two podcasts ago we went over these two excel spreadsheets that uh i can't remember his name gave to us and then i found another two oh oh it was the google chrome seo toolkit oh yeah yes if you have not downloaded that if you haven't downloaded chrome start or do it awesome and we also talked about uh flash right and and can google actually parse flash data and what do you do about that so uh go back that that is podcast number 69 go back and listen to that um if you haven't downloaded chrome do it if you haven't downloaded the seo toolkit for chrome do it it is awesome i talk about you know we talk about tools all the time this one is a must-have for
an seo guy gives you a lot of quick information about any website um yeah so that pretty much covers what we did last time a little bit of news uh google has dropped google wave there was a big huge thing maybe you know about it maybe you don't we started using it here and there was actually some initial very significant challenges so we stopped using it they fixed those challenges we started using it again and apparently they're going to drop it um it actually had like a 45 minute video intro which you know it takes a lot to get 45 minutes of like a week yeah to put together what was it was the demo uh the the release of it so it was probably straight to just like our podcast there is if you guys are wondering because the production quality is so amazing on our podcast no we do not do any editing all one take all right uncomfortable silence and they're all like duh duh um so google dropped wave it was pretty exciting the video was awesome there were some very neat features in it and you know paul made the point well paul apparently initially you know had some brilliant technical assessment that he never shared with me he's like what's the point i never saw any point of wave and i'm running around here carrying a wave banner and paul's just apparently laughing at me he's like i'll use it if you want to i don't see any harm in actually using it so um so yeah dropped wave uh here there was an interesting article this was on cnn and i literally i only got to the title and i'm like and the title is it was right on the heels of i don't know if you know this saudi arabia has stopped rim service so blackberry service and uh and there are a couple other typically middle eastern come like that i don't even know what that means middle eastern companies that are following suit uh uae
is one of them and um and you know they're they're arguing it's kind of funny how they're saying we're taking the same precautions that america would take to protect its national security um yeah but we're not but you but well but i see their logic is anything to protect national security we would do it except uh democracy and freedom of speech comes first i mean that's you know the famous franklin or i mean jefferson if you uh what is it if you're willing to give up your uh freedoms in pursuit of um what is it in pursuit of safety you deserve neither safety nor freedom uh that's i think something that we believe here um that's cool but they probably don't care yeah no about yeah it's funny though that they come up with like like they feel they have to defend their positions and their defense is oh we're doing what you would do uh but we're not no doing it kind of crazy like you're right and you know we can hardly have news without any sort of apple discussion right and uh there was a pretty funny little article uh apple broke my iphone oh really with their new bloated operating system which works like my old ass computer like my apple 2e yeah so hey disc that's you know what recorders dude that's the computer i wanted oh really i had a commodore 64 you had like i don't know maybe you had one extra color in the monitor or something yeah i had blue i love the calvin and hobbs do you ever did you ever follow that when he's asking his dad why are these photos uh in black and white he's like son well before 1950 there was no color you know i used to think that when i was young i really didn't think it make like for a kid it makes sense oh wow back then i'm so glad we live in an era of color color now that's what's up all right um and oh
i had one other piece of news that i didn't get to last time because if you listen to our podcast you realize that i lost my notes right immediately before um facebook has pulled i think it's called pancake from 45 million facebook users so 45 million users were using them uh the the the software pancake was about creating a quiz and you could share a quiz uh and apparently they were using some techniques that you that facebook wasn't comfortable with i don't know if you know this farmville everyone kind of knows farmville right um they had they seriously restricted what they could do because initially every time you like grew a head of lettuce it would send an email you know it would send a notification to to your wall and to everyone hey you know chris grew a head of lettuce yeah and and they stopped that well all of those yes they did i thank you they did it afterwards because all of those notifications did a great job of building up farmville right and so um so it's going to be harder to create a farmville kind of equivalent that's cool because i get so tired of seeing that i don't play games on facebook i'm just a loser like that so and i see people on farmville and i'm like what about work like how are you growing lettuce at 230 yeah how did that happen i was going to say you've been on this for like i get like eight notifications from your farmville i'm like god dang like how do you have time to do this mess heck of a morning man and those are our clients we're doing that information i asked you for punk that we're doing all their work and then they get to play farmville all day and taunt us with their and i'm glad they shut down the quiz thing because i'm like i hated those things yeah people send those to me i'm like no i didn't respond to the other 15 you
sent me yeah god get the point yeah maybe facebook needs to keep track of how many things you ignore and then start creating a profile of okay this dude's going to ignore everything so let's kick them off thank you facebook shut down due to inactivity all right um the the next thing i got is actually a you know darren bowie's letter yeah let's run into that this is pretty cool link frenzy link frenzy that's the subject so um apparently darren was in portugal we missed you uh for 10 days so that could have been two podcasts that we missed you for um and we're happy to have you back oh by the way if you want to send an email to us or stalk us or find us or whatever here here are the the plethora of ways we have available for you uh typically at 9 15 central standard time on friday mornings today is thursday morning uh because we're kind of shut down for tomorrow at least a couple of us us uh and uh so 9 15 central standard times on friday mornings you can find us the easiest way to get there is to go to e-webstyle.com slash you stream that's the letter you stream that'll take you immediately to our you stream page where you can see us broadcasting live immediately um the other ways that you can follow us twitter.com slash ewebstyle no dash in the ewebstyle facebook.com slash ewebstyle no dash in the in the ewebstyle um ewebstyle.com slash youtube that's y-o-u-t-u-b that'll take you to um our youtube page we've got a cool little animated video with paul in a bird hat and me with speaker princess leia ears so uh go check that out we also have the secret it's a short like three minute secret to how we accomplish everything we do as quickly as we do here so go check that out um it's we gotta put all that on like a page on one page we have like a million ways to uh
to contact we gotta put that on the page should i just add that to the list of things we need to do for ourselves and not for clients we're like that mechanic who drives the broken down piece of crap car because he doesn't get paid to fix his car he gets paid to make sure other people are succeeding in their businesses um and we're doing fine so uh link frenzy yeah so quick point on paul said in podcast number 68 apparently paul said something about google places uh darren bowie actually has two businesses in the same google places location same phone number darren hook me up i think it's europe because i am in this battle with google right now over three different businesses on businesses same phone number same address hook bro email me hook me up man i figured you know other than well put us in contact put us in contact with the um the google person you have stroke with because um because we could please we could use that um and so what you're saying because we've talked about this about three podcasts ago actually number 68 apparently uh is that uh a different suite number is not working i uh i haven't heard back actually i'm still being reviewed okay wow so i don't know darren if you have any tips man i sincerely appreciate it other than the fact that i should probably move to europe if i want to do that uh but i have not been able anyone with a duplicate address or phone number gets under review well i think um darren what i would suggest uh preemptively uh because it probably doesn't have that much cost is get another phone number that's forwarded maybe to your your same line and put some sort of you know a suite number or apartment number or whatever on it so that when google's initial software goes because i imagine they're going to turn that on for europe uh because it kind of makes sense if um you
know perfect example we would like each of our customers who can do business from houston to to be housed and i'm putting the quote symbols up out of out of our office because then that's going to do well for them in houston and google places um and that would that's not you know that's not doing good by the google customer uh the google search user so uh google's going to put a stop to that pretty quickly so it kind of sucks because we all know that there are multiple businesses run out of multiple locations but if it only means that you have to get an extra phone number and kind of tweak the suite so we're we're in suite 106 here um we have another business listed here so we're going to put 106a and 106b and have a different phone number i think that should work i hope so it's under review it's under review and hasn't actually you know changed it so now my song has changed to where my review at thank you where my review at and then that's been under review what's taking so long i'm gonna stop rapping uh and so we got some news regarding okay so uh we did a podcast a while back darren bowie did one long page all of his content was on one page and he'd have little anchors that would jump down when you click the different tabs and uh and we kind of recommended hey you probably don't want to do that because individual pages will be handled separately excuse me i don't even know why i'm yawning um and what he said is that uh he read that if you had different h1 tags those are header tags that that would break up a particular page i think that's you know that's probably true i mean it makes sense i think some of the challenge you have is uh potentially for um google getting confused about what information is on what page so if you have a page and i
know you do seo over there in endoven if you've got a page that's focused on seo uh then you want all your seo anchor text links coming to that seo page uh what in in your case it'd be coming to your home page and then you would also have your web design coming to your home page so google you're you're going to be diluting your inbound anchor uh google juice uh you know from one subject to another so i would still recommend that you separate those but i love the experiment if you know keep it up it looks like you're doing well you say you're uh you only launched it three weeks ago the website is creative-dynamics.eu and for web designer endoven and web design endoven uh you're doing well and you're on the first page second position for seo endoven so uh that's that's pretty cool yeah um and you know i really appreciate these notes he's saying that i need a runner for the podcast so i don't lose my scripts that'd be awesome and and they could bring me coffee and coke at the thing i remember that's diet coke and and this time it's actually diet pepsi so uh and and he asked me how am i at jquery um i could be kind of hokey and go j what except i know what it is and i suck at it i've never i've never even touched it so you know let's say this i'm brilliant at it i've never touched it and i don't don't really have time um but yeah send me a note what are you doing with jquery that's kind of cool i know it's pretty powerful stuff it's um it's a way to do uh interactive stuff um uh very dynamic and it uh it's kind of it's it's i believe ajax technology so you don't actually have to leave the web page to actually grab information from a database or from your from your server so um darren buoy as usual uh we really appreciate
your correspondence um and the challenge is still out there i think you know we put together the bird hat and speaker princess leila uh animation apparently you accepted the challenge and you know we're at least 10 days into it you weren't i you know should we give him a slack because he's i'll give him a pass because he was in portugal he's in portugal so hopefully you saw some good soccer over there abrigado that's what he finished with mutus abrigado which i just figured out because he was in portugal so you know what i'm done that's all i got all right i got a little something else google places this probably i guess is a news bit that's something i just read uh if you're not on google places get on it um google places you know like where you can put your local business listing on google they now let businesses respond to reviews on google places so this is something i printed out actually from search engine land starting today if you're a verified google places business owner you can publicly respond to reviews written by google maps users on the place page of your business if you are verified so if you're having verification issues or getting verified you need to get that handled i'm still having some of those same issues i do have a note on that it's pretty interesting it may be in parallel with what you're about to say um google has incorporated yelp and city search reviews in okay yeah it's actually a part of it uh now and here's the thing so basically you can respond to it uh they actually offer a guide to how to respond to reviews both uh positive and negative they actually recommend that you respond to reviews positive and negative now there are some limitations so i guess one of the so without even reading it i can tell you a good response a bad response for a negative review is that guy sucked anyway yeah i know he's no
longer allowed in our establishment yeah now their limitation is business owners do not get to respond to all reviews that appear on paces plages i.e. those from third party sources only those written by google users directly at google to my understanding uh i think like depending on the particular review but like up to half the reviews that come from google places come from third party sites i think it's even more i don't i don't i don't know that many people are using google places i don't think so either they're trying to push it probably the people who are using it are people who are actually writing reviews of themselves in google places but probably so they are really trying to push google places reviews i know that i've read that a while back uh and they're going to drop the city search and the yelp and yelp they get from yellowpages.com city search yelp a bunch of different places by the way if you wrote your own review and it was bad really just you'd need to close up shop yeah really so google this just tells me google is really trying to push uh google places they want their own reviews um and review we've talked about reviews a million times you want to get reviews and you want to respond to your reviews positive and negative there's a tool that helps you do that and you want to include reviews on your website testimonials and we've we've talked i'm sure we've talked in some of our podcasts if not now we are we're about to that you want testimonials on each of your pages you don't want a page of testimonials and you don't want to click here to go see testimonials yeah because our experience is that people don't do that so just make some short and you want them short you don't want like a five even though it's nice that somebody took the time to write five paragraphs about how wonderful your business and service is that's not what people
want to read when they want to read a testimonial they want to read like the bullet point you know wow they were awesome they were on time that promise and i would definitely recommend them yeah that's it uh keep it short so yeah and that's how i just started doing getting on yelp and for reviews and i think it's awesome so uh and i tell business owners hey you have some awesome yelp reviews this is why i came here i had dinner last night at guy neck across the street from two day postcards at a place called bowl i went specifically because they had yelp reviews uh yes so it's a soup and sandwich was there kind of some sort of unique review that you read there oh no not not that's jenny's that's that's on the other direction so that's good okay there's something else i want to talk about i had a conversation with a uh copywriter the other day basically this from this point on i'm gonna talk about content and the importance of content and this copywriter opened my eyes to something content is we always say something uh is king oh content is king content content content content right and uh to make a really long story short he says you know content is becoming increasingly important okay yeah i understand that uh and things are changing it's uh links aren't necessarily as important as they used to be five years ago which is something that i believe wholeheartedly there are other things that are becoming important facebook wasn't really important five years ago now it is twitter wasn't now it is in terms of your seo placement um so basically they took this guy and i don't want to say their name because i i didn't i didn't tell him i was going to bring this up on the podcast but he took a website that was registered in 2009 that was not excuse me he bought a domain in 2009 called the medical insurance quotes.com say that oh
well so he bought it a guy was just sitting on it and uh bought it from him this guy built a website for it and then he added to it he built a one page a thousand word splash page on it okay that was built in january or january of 2010 all right so that was built eight months ago and then he proceeded to show me how this website with nothing but content was able to get on the first page of google no backlinks no back content okay i really almost i kind of didn't believe him i a little bit of part of me did because i'd heard this before um that content was content was king duh but he showed it to me and he is 100 right and uh to make a long story short i kind of give some of the details of it okay they built this website we'll say january the first right they added one page a thousand words last page uh no backlinks at all it had so obviously if you have one page there's no inter website linking no no inbound links no outbound links okay as of march the first there the page for that search query was on the 14th page of google and there was only one page index obviously because there was only one page so they started adding content to it they added 42 pages of content between march the first and april the 15th they didn't upload this content they just had the content there it was still that one page that one page was able to take them from the 14th page of google to the seventh page of google between march the first april the 15th 2010 april the 15th 2010 so they have jumped seven pages just just with one page of content of good content like good freshly written content march the may the first by the way this is one of the copywriters we use so we can use this name i'll be happy to share
we do have that kind of quality content that come yes that we use to uh to do may the first they launched a brand new site with 42 pages of content that they had already built right uh this was may the first then they also decided they were going to add uh i think about 28 pages on after may they were like we're going to add about 28 more pages to the site so uh may the first they launched on may the first they were in page three the day they launched they were already on the page three this is from work they had done with a one page thousand word splash page all right so let's fast forward to june the first they're still on page three google has indexed 21 pages of their content well here's how google index them may the first one page may the 15 five pages june the first 21 pages june the 15th 82 pages so what google says one it's a brand new domain google was at first slow to index their content once they started noticing that they're adding content frequently and off you know often well same yeah uh it started indexing their pages a hell of a lot faster so from may the first to june the 15th google index the google's indexing went from one page to 82 pages very quickly from may the first to june the 15th or excuse me june the 18th their google placement went from page three to page one on june the 18th so let me backtrack that up from march the first to june the 18th they went from page 14 to page number one and that's page 14 with no with no website basically yes and then to page one to page one content only content only no backlinks now they have internal links now because they have more than one page but no backlinks at all so within three and a half months let's say a hundred a hundred and ten days this website
with no backlinks went from page 14 to page number one had uh all 82 of its pages been had been indexed uh with no backlinks no nothing didn't we look at this and kind of determine that a lot of that was because it was in the sandbox anyway yeah part of it was in so they were going to be in the sandbox anyway so there was really no reason to upload that initial that content from the very beginning uh it was important to get that one page out there so that you can get out of the google sandbox and um if you if you're not familiar with google sandbox go to our website actually go to our blog you can go there's two ways to get there just go to the website ewebstyle.com um and i think at the bottom no at the top there's a blog link or if you go ewebstyle.com slash tech info t-e-c-h-i-n-f-o uh that'll take you directly to our blog and you can search google sandbox and you'll find a podcast that we did do some talking about uh yes sandbox and uh he talked about the sandbox he also talked about caffeine you know if you haven't heard of google caffeine that's a bunch of podcasts ago but the way caffeine is is like a glutton for content they the way it it indexes content faster it gives weight to fresh content you know to new content that's relevant it's uh i think it was like semantic and whatever it can read literally read your content and figure out does this really make sense contextual yeah contextual it's it's it's very intelligent and it's just a glutton for content so this is a perfect example of how content is really king now am i saying drop your links or don't pay attention to your links no we we still do links we still need a part of our ongoing campaign this was just a great case study and even he was saying you know links are still important okay
but this is proof positive that content is extremely important these days well you know so like like we always say all of this is theory and conjecture we don't know the algorithm so it's always going to be theory and conjecture until uh somebody steals the algorithm and gives it to me and you know yeah there you go next week somebody i may talk to a guy who says i have a one page website with no keywords that's a billion links that hasn't even been indexed and it's on the first page because of all the links it's not even built yet it's linking to my dream weaver that's cool you know so it this is just i thought was a great example about your content we use a first class uh content you know copywriting service when we do our content uh top notch and this is just proof positive that uh they are they're awesome at what they do i'd love to talk about it once they once they say it's okay yeah i'll even hype us up but they better give us a link too yep fools and some free content that's what i'm talking about and our google place is back yeah that's it yeah oh there you go so uh it's awesome i hope you guys enjoyed that content is king y'all if you didn't get anything out of this content is king kind so we got we got a couple things we're gonna have to pull up that list again what we got five things for uh for seo we've got keywords content keywords links and keywords that's right yeah yes keywords keywords very very very very important um well this is the end of podcast number seven zero that's 70 for those of you putting the numbers together uh you are listening to the most popular seo podcast on itunes uh it is the unknown secrets of seo we love having you i really really miss that i don't have any reviews yeah that would be great if you have
any uh questions comments send them to us podcast at e-webstyle.com we'd love to know you know thoughts ideas new questions for topics uh whatever pictures of estonia send us send them to us and we need we still need the the pictures of uh saint saint uh john virgin adams saint croix saint croix yeah wasn't it saint croix that i don't know but i'd like to i'd love to see some pictures to saint croix in case someone wants to send them send them on send them on over um thank you guys for listening thank you guys for making us the most popular seo podcast on itunes we really appreciate it and uh you know contact us anything that we can do to help you guys we're here about uh we're all about sharing uh seo information and if you guys have something that you think we're missing because we're good at what we do we're not perfect uh let us know and we'd love to share it on air uh darren bowie's been a great example of that hey i gotta give another shout out to scott bonner um he's given us some great suggestions we've got some we've actually got some homework to do uh for some podcasts i think they'll be very powerful uh he wants us to talk about uh why should one be doing uh internet marketing versus traditional marketing now we all know that you should be doing it and there's a sense that maybe you should be doing it both but if you really only had a fixed number of dollars and who doesn't uh what should you be spending it on and so we think we can make a pretty good case that those dollars should be spent on internet marketing specifically with us actually uh but on internet marketing in some capacity so uh we'll be putting a podcast together like that scott you've given us you know great great ideas uh great input and he actually gave us a referral so yeah much love to scott bonner
out there what up scott columbus columbus ohio ohio even though i went to michigan i'm not gonna hold that against you scott yeah apparently i'm lying i am gonna hold that again apparently we need to fly up there you guys have to arrange for us to have some uh you know ohio michigan tickets fight to the death how about that yeah we can all get all painted up i can be like half michigan and half ohio because i really don't care and i can get beat up by all the fans traitor let's have a celebrity death match scott like mtv all right thank you guys for listening uh this is the end of podcast number 70 uh my name is christopher rose bye bye for now
