In this podcast episode featuring SEO Specialist Matthew Bertram, the focus is on demystifying Topical Authority in SEO and providing actionable…
To earn organic Google page one rankings, businesses should implement structured data Schema across result types including data table snippets, top stories carousels, local business panels, event rich results, and review snippets.
Don't rely on Google's algorithm to figure out what your HTML means. Tell Google exactly what your HTML means.
Discover 10 ways to go beyond the old 10 blue links and get more traffic from Google's enhanced organic search results.
The episode covers plain text organic results, video rich results, carousel rich results, featured snippets, data table snippets, top stories carousel, local business knowledge panel, event rich results, review snippets, and logo in knowledge panel. Structured data Schema is recommended across nearly all of these result types.
Populate your Google Business Profile as completely as possible, monitor your GBP dashboard regularly, respond to reviews and questions, keep all information current, and explore adding direct booking actions such as calendar links so searchers can complete actions without clicking through to your site.
When Google finds proper markup for reviews, it may display star ratings or review excerpts in search results. This increases click-through rates. Review snippets can be applied to service pages but not the homepage. Follow Google's schema instructions for simple reviews, aggregate ratings, or embedded review properties.
For AMP pages, Google recommends images be a maximum of 1200 pixels wide. For non-AMP pages, Google's article structured data developer page recommends a minimum of 696 pixels wide. Correct structured data markup is also required to appear in the top stories section.
Don't rely on Google's algorithm to figure out what your HTML means. Tell Google exactly what your HTML means. The more it trusts you, the more it's going to show your rankings higher.

Hi, and welcome to the SEO podcast, Unknown Secrets of Internet Marketing. My name is Chris Burris, one of the owners of EWR Digital. And my name is Matthew Bertram, your SEO strategist. The strategist. Welcome back to another fun-filled edition of our podcast. First, and potentially most important, Happy New Year to y'all. We are in Texas, so yes, it is Happy New Year, y'all. That is how you say it here. Hopefully, everyone had an amazing New Year. I know we got to be quick. Is there any story to share from your New Year? I got a lot of stories. Just got to share it in the green room. Oh, they'll save it for the green. Mine, one, real quick. I don't know if you've ever been on a plane that's almost landed. So it's gotten within, I'm not maybe a good judge of distance, but like 50 feet from the tarmac. And then decided not to land because it got, you know, a little error happened. That happened flying into New Jersey. And given everything that happened this year, like Southwest shut down 60% of their flights or something. That's nothing. Yeah, I know. I'm whining about, but I still arrived. But that was exciting. Okay. Well, I can tell you to mirror your story. Yeah. I did take some international flights. Yeah. And Landon, they were coming in pretty hot. Yeah. You know, like hit the ground, bounced pretty hard. And then we did get hit with the Southwest issue. Situation. Wow. So a family we were traveling with to Mexico couldn't make it. Wow. To Mexico. Yeah. So they had spent a bunch of money on, on hotel and entertainment and everything. Couldn't come at all. Got, we're able to get them a few credits on some things, but like totally had to write off the whole vacation. So, wow. Yeah. So painful. Yeah. So painful. Yeah. I had a, I had a rough flight into Mexico one time. It was, it was, it was, I'll tell you that story in the, the formerly
known as the green room. Um, uh, Hey, this is part two of, uh, we're actually, you know, part one, part two, uh, part one was in 2022. Part two is in 2023, uh, an article by Miranda Miller, uh, 10 different ways to get organic page one, Google rankings. We're going to cover that article here. The second half of that article here shortly, before we get into that article, you know, I've got, I would say I have a little bit of a testimonial, but it's more of a dissertation. Um, and it's, you know, it doesn't really talk about me at all so that, you know, it, you know, that means it talks about you, right? Like that, that's what the testimony, that's how that works. Cause there's two guys on this podcast and I, and I'm happy to share this. This is from, uh, Mark liqueur. Am I saying that right? Yeah. That's kind of cool. Uh, not to be confused with liquor that you would consume. So Mark liqueur says, and, and really it is pretty long. So I'm going to kind of read the first paragraph, bounce around and then finish at the end. This is a brief attempt to give a personal recommendation for Matt. I say attempt because no text can do justice. You need to meet him in person to truly appreciate how wonderful a person he really is. Wow. That's just person. That's, that's, that's a, I feel like that's a good start. Maybe if they all started like this, we should require that as people leave reviews. Uh, reviews. Um, he, he says he met him about five years ago. He's trusted Matt in his home with his business with, um, you know, economic understanding. And then I'm going to hop to this last paragraph. I wholeheartedly and highly recommend Matt for whatever endeavor he sets his sights on. Do not take advantage of what he has to offer. Wait, wait, wait, wait. I don't know. To, Oh, to not take advantage of whatever he has to offer. You
would be a, would be a tragic mistake. Please feel free to contact me in person at any time to discuss the recommendation or answer any questions that you may have about Matt. Like that's wow. Well done. Congratulations. You've, uh, you, you clearly have had an impression on Mark. Yeah. Well, uh, we've been working with their consultancy modal point as well as a oil and gas global network. And, um, you know, yeah, I like that oil and gas global network. Oh, GG. And it says the largest podcast network focused on oil and gas. They got some great clients, Amazon, uh, IBM, Hewitt Packer. Um, a lot of people are trying to reach the oil and gas space. Yeah. And, uh, it's, which, which has a headquarters here in Houston, of course. Yeah. Yeah. And, and so they got 20 different something podcasts and, um, yeah, we're about to start a podcast together, uh, focused on marketing and sales. And, uh, yeah, he's, he's, he's a good guy. I've known him for a long time and, uh, it's nice to, you know, see that show up. Like I was like, whoa, take the time to leave, leave, leave, leave a nice review of it. Very cool. Well, and, and you'll see, you know, that's coming soon and we'll certainly mention it, uh, on here when that gets started and, you know, people will see it. Yeah. We've done, we've done three of them. Uh, we just haven't released them yet. We're going to do like seven of them. Then we're going to like release them all. Yeah. I definitely know that feeling. Um, we do have a sponsor. Our sponsor is yet again, and maybe forever because we really liked their product, uh, S E ranking. Uh, it is a search engine optimization ranking software or, or software to help you get good ranking. They're a couple of notes about it. It's good. And it's inexpensive. It's professional. And not only is it professional, it's easy to use. It has a lot of tools and each of
the tools could actually be sold individually. So Chris, I feel like we should do like an ad and then something pops up in your hand. Oh yeah. And then something pops up here. It's good, but it's inexpensive. It's professional and it's easy to use. That's all I can imagine in my, I mean, my, my, uh, take on advertisement for endorsement endorsement is, is a, I, I really liked the tool. I really liked the data. Uh, it's comparable to other third party listening tools, uh, in the space. Um, if you're paying for another one and, um, they're, they're, they're, you should see what else is out there. Like if you've been using a tool for a long time and you see what else is out there, uh, because there's a lot of good things in the marketplace and things continue to change like SEO changes, like digital marketing changes and, and looking at different tools is, is really good. But also for me, at least personally, um, I had to use the tool for the 30 days to, to really use it. And I had to force myself to use it. So I, I feel like the whole like kind of freemium trial. Like thing is you have to have enough time to get your head around the software and how to use it and how to navigate it. And then once you do that, there's a big moat there, right? Like, like you think about apple or something like that. If you learn how to use the software or Google or Microsoft or whatever, um, you don't want to change. Right. Yeah. And, and so it's, it's extremely painful to change, right? Like, so you only under duress. Do you want to change? Yeah. Like you're not going to change Google. I'm not going to change apple. Cause like, I know it, like, it's just easier to get the upgrade. And, and so I think that that's, what's happening with, with, with some of these other softwares, but these guys came into the United States
to your crane company and, and they're absolutely crushing it. They're going to watch a bunch of awards, a great tool, great usage. Um, people are really liking it. Uh, we like it. My team likes it. I would encourage y'all to check it out. So, and you can get more than the standard 14 day trial. You can get a 30 day trial and you can get that by going to bestseopodcast.com forward slash se ranking that will forward you directly to their, to the landing page that they've created for us. Uh, the best SEO podcast, and you can take advantage, go, go take advantage of that. We're asking you, it's the beginning of the new year. Like you should try a little bit of new software and do things that are a little bit different to shake things up. I like that. I like that. Yeah. We'll challenge you. And what are your goals? How much time do you have Matt? Personal, professional, physical, mental. Um, all those things are important. All of them are important. All right. So we're going to jump into this article. Um, it's a really nice article by Miranda Miller. Uh, it's 10 different ways to get organic page one, Google ranking, go back and listen to the podcast, but I am going to kind of summarize the four that we've already mentioned. Uh, and these are different ways that you can get, uh, organic for first page listing, uh, one plain text, organic search result, like kind of, kind of used to that. Right. Now, of course the 10 blue links no longer exist anymore. They're augmented by video rich results, uh, carousel rich results, uh, and featured snippet. And now let's go into number five, data table snippet. So Google initially developed this result just for news media, but as brands increasingly function as publishers and may even tackle timely news stories, they'd be, there could be an opportunity for businesses as well. Note Google is also able to read data that is displayed in HTML tables, um, and display
them as a data table snippet. They can do that, but don't risk it. Make sure you're implementing the structured data that's necessary for this. In fact, uh, when, uh, Miranda answers the question, how to optimize for this particular snippet, um, one explore Google's approach to data set discovery and find developer resources here, read more about displaying data tables and search results, uh, and, and she's got links here. So, so yeah, it's a great way to get information and to control more of the real estate on that first page. So I would just say, uh, structured data, Google just came out with some new guidelines around structured data and there's been some changes. That's something on my desk that I need to dive into. Um, so how many pages is that a lot? Yeah. Yeah. You don't look happy about the number of pages, but, but I mean, structured data is not something that everybody's doing. Uh, if you do it, Google has more trust, um, there's a higher likelihood it's going to show up. Structured data has been one of, uh, the strategies, best practices to stay ahead, uh, in SEO. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Don't, don't rely on Google's algorithm to figure out what your HTML means. Tell Google exactly what your HTML more trust you, the more it's going to show, show your rankings higher. Yep. All right. Number six is top stories carousel. So this displays the headline source name and an expanded image. Uh, these results are open to blogs as well as media websites. Yeah. Proper, proper optimization heater can result in your article being automatically converted into action on Google assistant, enabling people to access your content through the voice assistant. Do you like that? I think it's amazing. I really can't say anything. Uh, about this. Cause I, I don't have the Google assistant. We probably need to get some, what are their dots? Oh, that's right. You use Apple. Well, I mean, look, well, everybody's competing in the space. Uh, now, you know what I am using chat
GBT or whatever it's called. Oh yeah. Yeah. That's kind of cool. I've been playing around with that a lot. It's kind of like a genie. Okay. Right. It's kind of like magic genie. Make me say this. Well, what I mean by that is, you know, you ask for three wishes. You've got to be really specific about what you're asking. It gives you your wish, but yeah. It answers the question, but if you don't ask it just right, you don't get the wish that you want. Right. Yeah. Yeah. And so I've been playing around with, with the, with those, uh, prompts. Um, so I am playing around with that, but I don't have like, you know, all the different, uh, voice search stuff, uh, around. I certainly think, think I should probably get one to play around that, but I, I can't speak to this. I think it's really cool. Um, I know that Google's worried from an ad revenue standpoint about voice search. How do you, you know, you ask for a voice search. Does it run? Does it give you an ad before you give the answer? Um, so that's going to cut into margins. Uh, you know, Google's down, Google's got like a 17 multiple right now. It's very affordable. From, from what? Well, I, I feel like a lot of things are affordable right now where they, Tesla's come down a lot too. Oh my God. I think it could come down more, but it was at a hundred multiple. Yeah. And it's like at a 40 or something. It's still high, but yeah. Yeah. It's, it's, uh, it's an impressive plunge. I think that's a, that's a fair. We're done, but you know, this is not a stock market show. So I'm going to keep going. All right. So how do you optimize for this story? Top story carousel. Uh, Google will display news content in the top stories carousel, regardless if the article is published in AMP or not. Right. So you don't need to go necessarily go through that
effort. Although we do recommend it. Um, well, hold on AMP though. Like, I don't know. AMP was hot and then it not as much, not as much anymore. It may be what we originally thought, right? Like this is for news sources. And then let's see if, you know, kind of standard service businesses and maybe e-com businesses can take advantage of it. And there were some little advantage, uh, but at the end of the day, it seems to be rolling back to new services. And I would just say like page speed, super important. That's what, where I always viewed AMP. Um, I would tell you that, um, a lot of these builders are kind of bulky and heavy and we've moved away from them to, uh, just building in WordPress and, and, and keeping the code light. Um, that, that's something I, I would recommend, but you can't get as fancy with like imagery and, uh, like, uh, like all that kind of stuff, but, but still you want a lightning fast experience. That's like the key. So what is important is that the webpage uses the correct structured data in order to pass along relevant information that can be used to show in the top stories section of Google search results. Additionally, be sure to use the right size featured image. It is recommended by Google that images for AMP pages be a maximum of 1200 pixels wide for non AMP pages. Google's article structured data developer page recommends a minimum of 696 pixels wide. And then there's some other kind of recommendations that you could go to the article, but, but yeah, make sure that you're conforming if you want to show up in that top stories, uh, carousel number seven local business knowledge panel card. That's a, that's a mouthful. Yeah. Yeah. It's also, I think we could just call it GB, GBP, but, uh, with the proper markup and optimizations, business panels can have a great deal of functionality and interactivity. Not only can searchers find your address, your phone number, your
hours of operation without clicking through to your site and then having to like find that stuff, but they may be able to complete actions such as booking a table, placing an order or making an appointment, um, directly there. Like the, anytime you can make it easier to use, right? Like I don't have to click through. I don't, like anytime you can do that, you should like really, really, you should. Interesting. I'm going to, I'm going to look and see if I can get it set up. A calendar link inside of that. Yeah. And schedule now. Yeah. Schedule now. Cause that, that, I mean, that's what, if you're listening and you're looking for marketing and consultancy, um, you know, digital consultancy, digital strategy, whatever, uh, first step, book, book, a discovery call, book, a free consultation, first consultation is free. Um, we drive everybody through counter. We, uh, there's pay links in there. It's great. We embedded on our site. Um, but I think that, uh, being able to book from the GMB, if people are searching for it, Hey, you see the stars, you can read some stuff on, on it and you can book right there. That would be pretty cool. So I'm going to look into that. I think that's a really good tip. It's pretty good. That's one of the reasons we do this podcast so we can stay on top of everything. By the way, your local business knowledge panel expands as more relevant information is added, making it incredibly hard to miss on both desktop and mobile point. Have a complete listing. How do you optimize for this type of listing? Expand your panel as much as possible by populating your GBP Google business profile, uh, monitor your GBP dashboard and interact regularly with searchers who leave reviews, ask questions, or otherwise attempt to engage your business on the GBP platform. Keep all information up to date in order to avoid poor searcher experiences, such as directing someone to a closed location, uh, and eroding your search. So I would
just say that this doesn't even go close to doing its service of SEO local and optimizing, uh, for GMB, GBP, BTP. And, um, you need to go check out one of our other podcasts about that. We have some articles on it. Um, really, really important local search, super important, depending on what kind of business you are. This doesn't even do its service on all the things that you need to do. And, and it's actually a whole different search engine. Yeah. Okay. And Google wraps together. And it has the value of a whole different high end search engine. So like content and, and many blogs and all the things that you need to do, that's a whole different search engine, very similar algorithm, but universal search wraps together Google's regular search product with, well, YouTube, because they own that mostly, right? Like I don't see any other videos besides YouTube, you know, maybe occasionally something else, but I think it's all, all I've seen. It's almost exclusively YouTube. I feel like it's all YouTube. There might be something else. And then, uh, uh, Google, Google my business, right. Or Google professional, or what is it? Google business, uh, professional profile profile. Yep. Yeah. Like, and it's all, and then it's all wrapped together. Put your coin in the terminology, jargon jar. That that's the biggest thing about SEO is a constantly moving target. Yeah. Keep changing things, keep changing locations. What I'll tell you, the analytics, uh, in the platform, they're linking it to, uh, the new analytics for, and they're linking it to search console. So you can click through the search console. So the data's certainly changed. They're trying to better, I think, integrate it. Cause they're having to run different, different stuff. So I don't know exactly what's going on the backend, but I'm seeing a lot of changes with the user interface. I had, I had a conversation with our analytics guy yesterday, digging into some PPC data and, and, and, and, and I had forgotten how much effort he had put
in to actually tie in the e-commerce results right back into, because if you're relying on data on a, on a, on a web hit to actually relay information back to, to Google analytics, you know, Apple's not necessarily keen on that. There's, there's devices and browsers that are, that are stopping that. And if you do it at the API level, you can't stop it, right? Like it's literally behind the scenes, the, the e-commerce API communicating with analytics and, and that's complex stuff. And that's the, by the, by the way, I'm just, just a quick question that the GBP and this analytics stuff is, we do that, right? We do a lot of that. We have like, like fixed packages for that stuff. Cause sometimes it's just not done right. Maybe you're in a, like, maybe you got everything flowing and you're like, if I just had better data, I could spend my money wiser. We've got a package for that. If you could just optimize your GBP listing. And really that's an ongoing situation, but you know, we've got a package for that. Yeah. The last thing I'll say is what's hitting search console doesn't always show up in analytics cause you got to wait for the pixel to fire. And so if your site's slow and they bounce before then there could be this big discrepancy of data you're not seeing. So it's pretty important. So get it right. Yeah. All right. Number eight, again, 10 different ways to get organic page one, Google rankings. Number eight is an event rich result. Mark up your events pages with events structured data helps this information appear in Google search and maps results, search and maps results. Searchers can also click through to see more events and then filter by date. Give it great listing of, you know, concerts in Boston, May, 2020, 2022. How do you optimize for this? Uh, and really have covered that already for the occasional event or just a few on your website, use Google data highlighter, apply the proper event markup.
We're back to scheme. Gosh, I, I just, I haven't done that in a while because of COVID. Oh yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Way to have been, but it's time to get back into it. So, yeah. All right. Number nine, uh, we got two left review snippet. When Google finds the proper markups for reviews, it may expand your rich results with a review excerpt, uh, or an average combined rating score. Currently this rich search result type is available for books, local businesses, movies, music, products, and recipes. Matt, I, I think I know your opinion, but just, just so the audience is clear. Um, reviews good reviews are good reviews are good reviews are good, Chris, really good. And, and really, uh, you utilizing the review snippet on anything, but the homepage, like you don't, they don't let you do it on the homepage, but you can do it on service pages. You can do it on other things. There's kind of some little pro tips in there, uh, but when people see the stars, they're more likely to click. And so that's something we've been doing for years and years and years. Yep. And, uh, reviews are so good that we actually made protestimonial.com so that you can get video reviews for your business. We built that during COVID too, right? Yeah. So yeah. Like make, make that happen. That video testimonials, if you check out our site, we've got a ton of them on there from clients. It's the most powerful form is a third party, uh, giving their name, their business, who they are, what you've done for them in a video, in a video, you can read their body language. And it's one of the keys is it's easy, right? So depending on your customer demographic, you know, Oh, how am I going to get a video review from these people? They got to either pull out their phone or figure out how to do a video on the computer. This is easy. It can work on your phone without an app. Uh,
it can work on your computer without an app. Like you don't have to do anything special. Uh, so you can go check that out. Protestimonials.com. Protestimonial.com. A single. Yeah. But, uh, yeah, it's, it's a great, you just send a link. They can, uh, leave a review anywhere and you can put it on your website, uh, on your social media. Yep. Um, yeah. Once the review is done, you can like add intro music, add some intro text or whatever. It's pretty cool. It's amazing. Yep. Uh, really, uh, really, really amazing. So how do we get a review snippet? Uh, follow Google's instructions here for optimizing, whether you want to add a simple review, embed a review into another schema.org type using its review property, add ratings to reviews or add aggregate ratings. Uh, aggregate ratings like are just kind of a way to leapfrog, right? Like you can say, Hey, we got 4.5 stars out of a hundred stars. Like, yeah, that's, that's really powerful. That that's really powerful. You should do it. Scheme is important. That's what I'm hearing. Yeah. Yeah. That's a recurring theme. And number 10, guess what? Scheme is important. Um, logo in knowledge panel and search. So reinforce your branding at every opportunity by ensuring that your logo appears in your business panel and in search. And they gave the example of Bing. Does it sound like claim it? Is that what it's telling you to do? Let's see, so how to optimize for this first, use a logo that's 112 by 112 pixels, uh, at minimum, uh, either JPG, PNG, SVG, you know, whatever, uh, the standard web format, the last one is web P, uh, make sure that the image URL is crawlable and indexable and apply the proper markup. All right. Well, this, we could have say, uh, 10 different ways to get organic page one, Google rankings read the document that is currently on Matt's desk that he's postponed is maybe on the, the pile. I would say read the eat guidelines. Yeah. And we, we actually
need to, to, to put, put out my internal training document on that. It's like 40 pages long versus like a hundred and whatever from Google. So I, I tried to shorten it some, uh, so schema and, uh, eat and do those two things in 2023 and you're going to be all set. And real quick, best practices starts with Google structured data guidelines. Next is trial Google structured data code lab where you can experiment with structure. Next use Google rich results tests. So you can test your, like, this is just all schema. And finally run Google's rich results status report after implementing, do it regularly to optimize your content. Listen, before chasing any type of result, make sure you understand the opportunity, the competition, and the searcher intent you hope to get in front of with that specific type of content. You know, having a strategy is, is always the best strategy and good content. I would add to that. And we have to wrap up. I'm actually late. So we're going to have to run. Um, well, we'll end it here. Uh, thank you. Happy new year to you guys. Thank you for making us the most popular SEO podcast.
