Google ranking factors are not weighted equally. But by focusing on the factors that have the most impact, you can get the best bang for your buck with your SEO efforts. Check out SEO Podcast 383 with Chris Burres and Matthew Bertram as we cover Google's 4 Biggest Ranking Factors.
According to studies by Search Metrics, Backlinko, and SEO Power Suite, as compiled by Aleh Barysevich, the four most important ranking factors are comprehensive content written in natural language, high-quality backlinks, mobile-first user experience, and other technical factors such as HTTPS, H1 tags, and anchor text diversity.
The episode cites a 3,500-word article ranking second only to Wikipedia for a golden retriever search as an example. Hosts suggest 2,000 words as a good target for blogs, and note that 5,000-word or longer high-quality articles could rank even better.
The hosts suggest two options: remove pages with irrelevant content since they may hurt overall SEO due to context issues with RankBrain, or find a way to blend the content toward your core business, such as linking it to a related service you offer.
The episode highlights HTTPS encryption, presence of H1 and H2 heading tags, diverse and semantically relevant anchor text to avoid a Penguin penalty, and avoiding interstitial pop-ups especially on mobile as the key technical factors showing strong correlation with good rankings.
