Google's MUM (Multitask Unified Model) algorithm is redesigning search by replacing People Also Ask with Things to Know, Nexus Topic Zoom, and visually browsable results, plus adding image-based searching.
Our vision for mom is not to move towards Google simply providing single unattributed responses.
Algorithm Cataclysm: Google Announces Search Redesign Using MUM AlgorithmGoogle announced a redesign of Google Search that introduces an intuitive way to explore topics and surface more content with MUM.
MUM stands for Multitask Unified Model. It redesigns Google search to allow image-based searching, replaces People Also Ask with Things to Know, adds Nexus Topic Zoom for topic exploration at different scales, and introduces visually browsable search results. Google also announced MUM integration into its Lens app.
According to this episode, People Also Ask is being replaced by three features: Things to Know, which surfaces related information about a topic; Nexus Topic Zoom, which lets users go more granular or more macro on a subject; and visually browsable search results that let users explore topics through images.
Nexus Topic Zoom is a feature in Google's MUM-powered search redesign that lets users drill down into more specific subtopics or zoom out to broader context on a subject. For example, when searching golf clubs, a user could zoom into grip details or zoom out to the origins of golf.
Yes. Google VP of Search Pandu Norak stated that MUM's vision is not to move toward providing single unattributed responses. Instead, Google plans to provide attribution and context, letting users identify sources and follow up on the information they find.
