Fix crawl and indexing errors, check for manual spam penalties, submit your sitemap, and set your geographic preference. Many site owners either lack access or have never logged in, so those steps alone can reveal major issues holding back rankings.
The hosts describe a siding contractor client whose site jumped two positions and started receiving form submissions after they condensed style sheets and resized images. Page speed improvements affected both rankings and revenue, since siding is not a cheap product.
A link posse is a network of socially engaged people, around seven or eight, who share, tweet, and link to each other's content after it is posted. The key is keeping it authentic, not spammy, and only sharing content that is genuinely worth sharing.
Yes. Linking users away to Facebook or Twitter means they are gone and likely will not return, costing you both the social engagement and the potential sale. Embedding a Facebook like box or similar widget lets visitors interact with your social presence without leaving your site.
fix errors listed in Webmaster Tools. I think this is awesome, right? Because people need to do this. You'd be surprised how many new accounts we get, you know, and part of our audit, I'll get access to their Webmaster Tools and log in. Assuming they have access. Assuming they have it. Most of the time, they don't.

form a link posse. And basically, what that is is a network of people who you interact with socially or maybe even not socially. But they have online. On-home, socially online, yeah. But they're socially engaged.
Charles Lewis
Hi, and welcome to the SEO Podcast, Unknown Secrets of Internet Marketing. My name is Chris Burris, owner of eWebStyle. I'm Charles Lewis, your internet marketing specialist. Welcome back to another fun-filled edition of our show. As always, it will be fun and entertaining. Some people call it infotainment. Infotainment, yeah. I said educational the other day, but that's the real word. Which is the actual word, yes. Edutainment. Edutainment. We hear that regularly. This is podcast number 239. As always, we have a tip from our previous podcast, which may take me just a moment to pull up because I did not prepare prior to pulling this up. So, let's just go ahead and tell you how to make contact with us. There are many ways to make contact with us. One of them is facebook.com slash eWebStyle. YouTube.com slash eWebStyle. Twitter.com slash eWebStyle. You can always send us an email at podcast at e-WebStyle.com. And we forgot Instagram. No, no, no. I remembered. I just put it in another place. The last one is Instagram.com slash eWebStyle. That's all the ways to contact us. Remember, this is podcast number 238. In podcast number 239, 239. In podcast number 238, there is a tip. And the tip says optimize the responsiveness of your website. Yeah. A lot of times, you know, people get things misconstrued thinking that once they've built this site and now it's responsive. Which, by the way, is like, you know, people are all the rage. Oh, I need a website. Make sure it's responsive. Yeah. Do you really know what that means? What that means? Yeah. So, it's one thing to make your site, you know, presented the best way on a huge monitor. Right. Or a desktop monitor or a tablet monitor or, you know, a phone monitor. Right. You know, that's what the whole concept of responsiveness is. But let's take it a step further and actually optimize that process. What does that mean? That means if you're a responsive version for, let's say, a mobile device, then these people will likely be
looking to contact you. So, that address should be not only prevalent, but it should be linked in a fashion that will automatically open up, I don't know, maybe their maps or their navigational system so they can get to you quickly. It's a mobile action, right? Tap to call sort of issues should be involved. Yep. Understanding that people are using one finger when it's optimized for a tablet. And so, kind of think of those things. When styling, how your responsive site is going to look across multiple devices. Absolutely. Really good information. Remember, don't just jump on the responsiveness bandwagon. Jump on it intelligently. All right. We are broadcasting live from Houston, and please remember, we are your friendly, local, neighborhood top position snatchers. Yes. Where our mantra is. Don't be a deuce. If you can, tweet now. We've got the symbols on the screen. You can see it. Yeah, tweet. Hashtag SEO Podcast. This is number 239. Be sure to tag us in it, at bestSEOPodcast, at eWebStyle. That way we can follow you back, do all of our social stuff. You can get the latest tips, and, you know, keep in contact with us. Absolutely. And then we always are posting contact to the article that we discuss, if we discuss an article in a particular podcast. There are three things that you can do to help us out. They're very small. They're very easy. One of them has three tasks. You just go on to iTunes, you create an account, and you write a review. We're hoping that review is five stars, because we think we deserve five stars. Next, you could actually go to our G Plus Local page and write a review. If you're familiar with SEO, you're listening, hopefully you are, you realize G Plus Local reviews are really valuable. And the best way to get to our G Plus Local page is to go to e-webstyle.com slash Google Plus. Or slash Google Plus. Or slash G Plus. Or slash G Plus. All of those iterations will take you to our
G Plus Local page. Please remember to plus one us. We have 44 reviews and 35 or something pluses. So, people are reviewing without plussing. Obviously, the math is pretty simple. What else should they do? Plus one us when you get there. Put us in a circle when you get there. That way, you know, you can send us your content. But more importantly, give us that review. And then let us know, you know, what you think about what's going on over here at e-webstyle. Thank you. And also, our Facebook page, facebook.com slash e-webstyle. And when you're there, you can find the section that has reviews. It also should be a five-star review. Please write that in there. And also, you know, you're following us on Instagram. So, go ahead and, I don't know, maybe take a picture of you watching. Do a selfie of you watching our podcast live. That'd be kind of awesome. And post it up on Instagram, please. Remember, we had the one in the family room with the kids on the... And if you do that, I'll use that image as our default. Oh, it's our featured image for that post. Ah, very cool. Kind of cool. I like that. Very cool. Also, we're always in the market for good PHP programmers who really have a WordPress focus. So, please, we've got a very particular process. Dial 713-510-7846 to get started on that. Add a comment or review. Finally, leave a review on Stitcher. Let's not provide it. So, earlier, I lied. I'm sorry. I said three. It's actually four. Or the fourth one is Stitcher. The way I always get to that page is to go to... And I don't even know if you write a review from the Stitcher app. I think you do. Or if you can just go... What I do is... Do it from the web. Yeah. I go stitcher.com slash... No, stitcher.com space, space, space, which tells Google that you want to do a search inside of that. And then I do like SEO podcast unknown.
That's it. And you'll get to our podcast. Hopefully, you can leave a review there. If not, do it on Stitcher. We do have a referral program. You refer an SEO customer to us. They pay their bill. We pay you. Not hard. Free website analysis on our website, e-webstyle.com. We're almost through. Don't bear with us. We don't have any algo cat. And let's jump into... By the way, you see the... That's up. Yeah. I've got a tier... I saw when you walked in this morning. I was like, ugh. You've been at the tattoo shop, man. Yeah. Just no reviews. I got the tier tattoo because that's what happens when you don't get it in that. And now they're two. They're stacked. It's eventually just going to be a full stream. No, no. They're going to be crying. Yeah. Like permanently. This is not good. All right. So we'll get straight into the news. The news that we have, this is really SEO specific. So if you are using the all-in-one SEO plugin, it is a WordPress plugin that enables you... Actually, it has a lot of really good features. Yeah, pretty cool features. It's a great plugin. It helps you do your on-page. It helps you with titles and descriptions and URLs and things like that. It would be a competitor to, let's say, Yoast SEO, which we primarily use here. And have switched to... In fact, some of the features that I think of that were really good are actually no longer useful. And one of them was where you could flag any text, any text string inside of any blog post without having to do it manually. So say you got 10,000 blog posts and somewhere in there they say, I don't know, SEO podcast. And you could flag it so that that linked to your SEO page. No longer useful. Anchor text stuffing really... The one thing I will say that all-in-one has that Yoast doesn't, that I wouldn't mind if Yoast bought over, was the ability to quickly edit titles and descriptions
for multiple pages from one view. Yeah. That was kind of awesome. Yeah. Very useful. Very easy. But yeah, the news was update your plugin. Oh yeah, so there is... So we talked about it. Now, they had a security breach. It was identified. It was pretty bad, actually. And now they've got updates. Yeah. So this past weekend, they just released the update. So... That's true. It wasn't a security breach. It was a security vulnerability was released so people were aware of it. Make sure that if you're using the all-in-one SEO pack that you get that updated. If you're using an SEO company and you know your website is in WordPress and you kind of leave it up to them to handle everything... Yeah, send them a message. Double check. Let them know. Hey. Are you using all-in-one SEO? My plugin's updated. Yeah. If not, well, we can help you with that. This was interesting. Uber and Lyft have a cease and desist order in Virginia. Do you know what Uber and Lyft are? So Lyft is probably the closest thing to give you an idea of what they do. Hey dude, you need a Lyft? Oh, literally. Right? So it's an app where you can get Lyfts, right? And you can get paid. You get to the store. Yep. And if somebody's in the area on the app, they'll come take you to the store. You negotiate the price, I think, right there in the app and it gets paid through the app, all that stuff. Well, you can imagine taxi companies aren't too keen on this. Of course not. But so this is, this and the types of apps where you can actually procure a taxi cab have been under all sorts of upheaval. Yeah. Hale by cab and all of that kind of stuff. Well, so this one in Virginia, they were told to cease and desist. I think it's pretty interesting. Yeah. Like, why? Yeah. I think, well, because, so it really made me think about going back and like, okay, say, well,
at what point did they regulate taxis? Right? Because you know that happened at some point. At some point, maybe things were out of control. Maybe it was the mafia. I mean, the mob. I mean, the, the, the unions that kind of consolidated them. It was probably related to safety. We can have a, have a picture of that. Now that you have apps though, right? You book an app, like the worst thing you could do as a serial killer or a serial robber or whatever is use the app to go pick up somebody and then rob them or kill them. Because now the last thing that they did was actually in this, in the app. Gotcha. So, um, you know, those issues are no longer a big deal. Maybe, maybe we should make an app called, um, I don't know, hitchhiking. Right? Yeah, we'll rob this bank and schedule a lift. Yeah. Pick me up on the corner, dog. It's probably, you know, it's probably already been done. That's just, that's how dumb criminals often are. All right. So, um, there was a, oh, so Apple's dropping Google, right? Yeah. Yeah, this is kind of, kind of big. In two places, like for, for iOS on iPhone and for the, uh, Yosemite, um, new Mac OS X. We, we were, we were just on Blog Talk Radio and we were talking about this and how, how I think, I think it's, um, Bing has 17%, is 17% of search volume is going through Bing and we kind of, uh, jokingly hypothesized that that 17% were the 17% who have no idea how to change the default browser on a Windows, uh, machine or a Mac machine potentially now as we're, as they're taking over Apple machine as they're taking over. So, yeah, two locations. What do you think? I think that they will see an increase in search volume. That's genius. Can I write, let me write that down. That is true. You think it'll hold? Do you think long term? Um, probably not. Is there
a workaround? Do you know? Maybe you don't even know. Besides changing it back to Google? Yes. Can you, so. Yeah, yeah. They don't, they haven't eliminated the option. It's just coming default. Oh, okay. It's going to be Bing. You can still go in and change it. Okay. And I think over time that will happen. And once people realize that the search results suck, then the search result volume will go down. Man, why am I getting Bing results? You know? Yeah. This is, how do I change this? Although Bing results tend to look good, right? So, Bing will have an increase in search queries asking how to not use Bing. Yeah. How to, how to uninstall Bing as the default browser for Apple. I'd love to know the statistics of that already. Because they've made it a little hard enough that, you know, I do IT work. And sometimes I'm like, I don't remember how to change the browser and, you know, change the default search engine in this browser. Anyway, so Apple came out with a new feature in the new iOS called Handoff. So, you can be working on a document and then hand it off to, you know, on your phone, on your iPhone, and then hand it off to your MacBook Thin Air Pro, whatever, and then you can hand it off to some other device so that it just hands off almost seamlessly. Kind of like a la Wave. Remember Google Wave? Kind of like Google Docs. I mean, anything with Google right now, any Google account. I use it. Yeah. When I'm writing music, I have a song, a song, a phone full of songs. And I always, I open up my tablet and edit them. Shut the tablet down. Get to my MacBook. Open up Google Drive. Edit them there. And then, I was literally showing my wife how I could edit it here and she was watching it change on my phone. That's actually pretty cool. That's awesome, dude. And so. That's from Google Wave. Right? Remember where
they did? Well, that was, they kind of incorporated it. And then, yeah. But, yeah, so that's what's up. Apple, with your hand off. But, I think it's a little late. It's already been done. Yeah. I think it's a little late. You know the article I read. The dude was raving. Of course. And still trying to be kind of gloved about it. Because, like, yeah, I don't know how useful it's going to be, but it's amazing. Yeah. Yeah. It's awesome. It's a great tool. Yeah. Just late. If only you had thought of it. Next, Verizon is going to take legal action against Netflix. So, this is hilarious. Let's imagine you're a Netflix. Have you ever used Netflix? I have. I don't have it. From time to time. Yeah. So, we've got Netflix. Say you're using Netflix and your movie's, like, buffering a lot. Right? Mm-hmm. So, you call Netflix. You're like, what's going on with my, you know, movie widget? Why is it ISP? They apparently specifically blame Verizon. Often. Often enough for Verizon to threaten legal action and say, stop saying it's us. But it's y'all, though. Yeah. It's like you're the service provider at the end of the fiber. So, it is actually you. And finally, kind of in line with the all-in-one SEO. I guess Netflix argument is going to be, well, we don't have these issues on Comcast. Yeah. Exactly. Like, yeah. And finally, so, kind of like the all-in-one, there was an update. Remember, OpenSSL caused the big vulnerability. Yeah. Yeah. A few weeks ago. Across the board. Like, almost every device. They've come out with, because of all the pressure that's on them, they've came out with an update that fixed, like, I think it was seven vulnerabilities. So, that's pretty good. Yeah. That's better than, makes some good progress. I can't remember the name of that one, but it was, it was called, it was huge. I could probably go back here and find it in our notes real quick, but. I forget what it was called. Yep. If
I find it, I'll mention it. So, that is the potatoes of our podcast, since there are no reviews. No reviews. Time to get into the meat. Yeah. So, I want to give a punch in the face to Tom. Tom Schmitz. Put out, posted a pretty good article. I found this article on Marketing Land. Heartbleed. Heartbleed. Yeah. That's what it was. Heartbleed. So, I found this article, not the Heartbleed article. I found this article from Tom Schmitz on Marketing Land. Eight SEO cleanse and recharge ideas for the fall. Pretty cool. It was kind of an old article, but had some interesting content in it that I thought was pretty good, and content that's still useful today. And so, let's get in it. Eight SEO cleanse and recharge ideas. It looks like he got the title, like, eight health cleanse and recharge ideas for the fall. Let me just throw in SEO and see what I can do. Yeah. So, Lincoln got my attention. I like it. I like it, yeah. But on the cool, though, these were really SEO-related ideas. Very cool. So, number one, he says, fix errors listed in Webmaster Tools. I think this is awesome, right? Because people need to do this. You'd be surprised how many new accounts we get, you know, and part of our audit, I'll get access to their Webmaster Tools and log in. Assuming they have access. Assuming they have it. Most of the time, they don't. Right? Step one, get access to Webmaster Tools. And you'll log in and you'll say, whoa, no sitemap submitted, no this, no that. You look at these errors and there's crawl errors, there's indexing errors, there's all kind of errors. And so, he's saying fix those errors. And I totally cosign that. Because at the end of the day, if they're saying it's an error and they're having a problem with it, then you should probably fix it. But I'll say this. I'll take it a step further. Since you're in Webmaster Tools and you're in the fixing things mode, check
for like manual spam penalties while you're there. Since you're talking about cleansing and recharging your SEO, check for manual spam penalties. Because your Webmaster Tools is where you'll find that at. Submit your sitemap while you're there. Yeah, they don't hide manual penalties, right? No, it's big. Manual penalty. It's big, it's bold. Hey, and they'll tell you what kind of manual penalty you have. So, yeah. Check for penalties. Submit your sitemap. Set your geographic preference while you're there. You can go in and indicate are you targeting the U.S., you know, a certain region, a certain country, whatever it is. Set that up while you're there as well since you're in Webmaster Tools. Number two, which we were just kind of talking about. Number two, he says update your CMS plugins, modules, and templates. And I think this is key. Again, if you're using a content management system like WordPress or, you know, whatever one you choose to use, keep it updated. Keep it safe. Those updates are there for a reason. You want to make sure that you're using the safest, the most secure, the best version of, excuse me, of whatever template or plugin that you're using. And so, I'll add this to it. Since you're on your site and you're updating content, well, and you're updating plugins and themes, I'll say update your content. Yeah. Like certain content. And I'm not saying comb through your site, which you should do periodically. But like your About Us page, for example. When was the last time you visited your About Us page? How old are those photos? How old is the year? Yeah. You know, 20 years in business and you wrote that 10 years ago. Yeah. Right? That probably needs updating. Update your footer copyright info. Yeah. It's 2014. It shouldn't say 2010. Why you got to pick on 2010? So, update that. He says update your CMS plugins and templates. We were just talking about the all-in-one, which is a plugin, right? Those type of issues happen. And if you're not updated, then you're
vulnerable and you can pull your site up and see a page that has nothing to do with your site. Clear indicator you've been hacked. Yep. I'm speaking from experience. I had that happen. It'd be interesting to know how many people have actually ever had their WordPress hacked. And don't know it. And don't know it is one, right? And then the ones who do know it, right? Because we've had a number of our websites. We just, you know, you got to change passwords and go in there and update the plugins. Find the hacked script or code or whatever they added. Pull that out. It can be messy. It can be a nightmare. It's one of the things that we offer with our hosting, actually, with our WordPress hosting. Number three, he says social media links. He goes on to say high rankings are partially attributed to social media. I'll say attributed to active and engaged social media. And so, update those. Like, if you don't have any social media links on your site, shame on you, right? Especially if you're being social, then those links should be there. I'll take it a step further, though. Rather than just adding links, when applicable, embed those things. Like, for example, Facebook developers has made creating a like box that shows your friend's face is extremely easy to embed to your site. Yeah. Especially if you're using WordPress. So, take the time and do that because what you don't want to do is give somebody an option or some CTA like, hey, like us on Facebook and then a Facebook icon and a link to your page and now they're at Facebook. Yeah. Because they're not coming back. Yeah, we call that gone. Yeah, they're gone. And we've got to come up with another word. That's not a bounce. That's like a kick them off. A founce. Yeah. Facebook bounce. Yeah. A founce. Because they're gone. And they're scrolling. And so, not only did they not like you, they probably scrolled for 20 minutes and forgot what they were
doing. Yep. And now they're not coming back to your site and you probably didn't get that like. Instead, embed... Let alone the sale. Let alone the sale. Exactly. So, embed it in your site. So, that way they can like you and remain on your site. Same thing with Twitter. So, I'll say, and when possible, I'll add this to it, give a reason for the social engagement. All right? So, if you're going to follow us on Twitter, like I said it earlier, follow us on Twitter so you can get tips and a link to this article and things like that. You know, like us on Facebook so we can communicate back and forth. You can ask questions. We can answer those. That sort of deal. And so, give people a reason why they should be social with you more than just updating your social links. Number four, page speed. Right? Page speed is key. And so, we were talking about, you know, a store. We had a client. Yeah. A siting contractor. Right. And this is a pretty good site. You know, we built it. It ranked well. Yeah. But we were struggling to get it above the fold in regards to the search results. Right. We just couldn't crack that top five position. And then... And we also knew traffic was coming and not doing anything. Yeah. Traffic was... He was getting traffic, but the traffic really wasn't converting well. Right. And so, we tore the site up. We did all this. We did all that. And then, we began addressing the page speed issue. Yep. Condensed some style sheets. Resized some images. Done some other things. All of a sudden, page speed loaded extremely fast. His site jumped up two places. More importantly, forms started coming in. Form submissions. Convergence started happening. Siting's not a cheap product, by the way. So, yeah. That represented a lot of revenue. Yeah. Just by increasing the page speed. And so, do that. Matter of fact, he says one of the frequent culprits he runs across is bloated
image size. Yeah. So, no, don't take these pictures fresh from your digital camera with the, you know, 15 megapixels. And up them straight. Yeah. Yeah. WordPress will crunch them for you, but you... You should do it yourself. It's even better. Resize them and get it right, cropped and everything else. It's interesting because when we started using WordPress, it was like clients, more and more clients were clamoring, hey, I want to be able to control and upload my own content. And we're like, great. This is a platform. You can do it. You can do it. And then the first mistake they make is upload huge photos. And we're like, don't do that. Because you happen to visit their site and they're like, it's not loading very quickly. So, then it turned out we ended up doing all the work. And it really boils down to that. Nine out of ten customers, they request that specific capability and then they just email it to us. You know, it's just easier. They don't want to do it. Type it in an email, send it to us. We take care of it as long as you're doing internet marketing with us. Yeah. So, page speed is important. Matter of fact, Google made it extremely easy. If you Google developers, page speed insight, first listing will be a link to their page speed tool. And it's pretty awesome, right? You'll put your URL in there, hit submit, and it'll run a little query and then come back and report to you how slow your site is and how it looks and how you can improve it. And so, page speed, extremely important. Number five, update and accelerate your content plan. It goes on to say, publishing a regular stream of link worthy, it's key, link worthy content will grow your brand awareness, site traffic, and links. Again, we're talking about eight, you know, ways to cleanse and recharge your SEO. And so, your content plan is key, right? Content has always been key in regards to SEO. And so, you
need to make sure you're posting link worthy stuff. You said content plan? So, there should actually be a plan for your content. Yeah, yeah. Don't... It's not just create some content because I woke up on Monday and thought this would be a good article. To write some content. The next two weeks are like this. So, you mean like schedule it, have a plan for what the content is going to say on a regular basis, maybe if you had enough people following, they would actually enjoy the fact that they're sequential. Oh, wow. That's it. What a great concept. Come up with the types of content. Maybe you're talking about, I don't know, an SEO podcast. Yep. And so, you have video content, you have blog content, you got text content, you may have some supporting graphical content, all supporting that specific service or product. So, come up with that plan, strategize it. I went on to say, you know, post graphics videos or different types of content and schedule them, right? So, Chris, the example you said was wake up on a Monday. No, maybe you do wake up on Monday and decide that this week's content is going to be about this. And Tuesday, you're going to write it. Thursday, it's going to be proofread. Friday, you're going to find your images. Next Monday, it's getting posted. Yep. Content plan. Content strategy. With an idea for what you're going to do the following Monday. Exactly. And then the following Monday with the same thing, images and content and a video. And so, figure out how you're going to do that. I'll throw this in. Let others preview it before you post it. Just because you wrote it doesn't mean it's awesome. Somebody else could read it and think your content really sucks or they could watch a video and say this video's trash. Yeah. So, let somebody else preview what you're about to post before you post it and be acceptive of criticism. Yeah. Number six, organize link and social partners. So, this is like
after you've came up with your content, right? How are you going to get this content out? He says, organize link and social partners. He says, one of the best ways to get links on blogs and social media is to form a link posse. I was like a link posse. Ooh, link posse. Yeah. I like how that sounds. He says, form a link posse. And basically, what that is is a network of people who you interact with socially or maybe even not socially. But they have online. On-home, socially online, yeah. But they're socially engaged. They also generate and put out good content. And they're the type of people who will link back, who will share, who will tweet, who will plus one, who will like, who will dig it, right? Like, form this kind of posse, you know, seven, eight people who you frequent, maybe they're in your industry or not. But when you get ready to post content, you post it, you tag them in it, and that way they'll know it's there. They'll share it. They'll tweet it. They'll post it. And vice versa. Since you're part of that circle, when they post things, you do it. The key is not looking spammy and not looking like some sort of rogue, you know, Lincoln social clan or whatnot. But, you know, you may not have to plus one or link to every post. Right. Alternate. But the key is to get a group of people who are on the same playing field doing the same thing. And that helps your content spread faster. I'll say this, in case you don't feel like forming a link posse. Just interact with users who are social. Find your favorite brands. You'll see people who are always retweeting others. You'll see people who respond to questions when they're being asked. If these are people and they have a nice follower base and they're engaged and they're, you know, participating, then participate with them. Yep. And they will begin to participate with you. Just kind of how the internet
works. You begin sharing content with them specifically. Especially after you, you know, reviewed and plus one their content, then they'll likely do the same. And speaking of the content, we were just talking about a content plan. Right. Make sure it's good. At the end of the day, the content has to be good. Yeah. Like, nobody's going to want to share whack content. Nobody's going to want to share a song that's not a good song. Yeah. Or a graphic that kind of sucks. Make sure your content is share worthy before you begin trying to engage people to share your content. Also known as link bait. Exactly. Yeah. Number seven, review your SEO tools. Tools change all the time. I mean, you think about a mechanic, right? Yeah. A mechanic who doesn't have the right tools will take forever on your car. Assuming he can fix it. Assuming he can fix it. You know, if you don't have the right tools, then, yeah, it's hard to work without, you can't use a hammer for everything. I try. It doesn't work. It doesn't work. And so, so. Especially SEO. So, on our Facebook page, did you see the, it's the only way I could get Bing off of my browser and it just beat the crap out of, literally beat the crap out of the monitor. Bing, bing, bing. But review your SEO tools, right? I'll say it is, make sure that you're working efficiently. Sometimes you can be using an outdated tool. And so, there's a better version of it or newer released or maybe a competitor is just doing better. And so, but you're using the old one because, I don't know, you're comfortable with it because you know how it works because there's an ease of use there. But it's just not really the best tool to be using. We find ourselves making those changes. We're changing tools all the time. Because you have to stay consistent with what's working and what's better for not only you, but for your site and for your clients
and things like that. So, so yeah, review your SEO tools. One of the tools we use here is Xenu. Xenu. Xenu. X-E-N-U. Great tool. I use it for multiple reasons, right? It'll index your site and return back with the whole page count, right? Boom. Page count is necessary. If I were going to redo your site, I really need to know how many pages you have. Yeah. If I see like five on the home page and you actually have 5,000. Exactly. It's going to take a little longer. It's going to take a little longer. And so Xenu does that. But more importantly, Xenu allows me to export a spreadsheet with all of the pages and the URLs and the titles and the descriptions. This makes me doing your 301 redirects extremely easy. And so. 301 redirect. That sounds familiar. You're supposed to do that, right? When you change a site. Yeah. Especially when you change it like from like one technology to another. Wordpress or something. Okay. Yeah. So. And if I recall, that's where the internet comes to your old page and then the visitor and then the old page forwards to the new page. And that way, if the old page had links, then that Google was aware of. The old page had links, had link value, had link juice, had good content, had any number of positive things going forward, they carry on to the new page. So link juice gets forwarded with a 301 redirect paramount. Is that when you're changing the technology? We wouldn't say it's paramount. Absolutely. That should be like step two. Yeah. Step one, three-point domain. Step two, activate 301s. Absolutely. So. Cool. Do that. And Xenu makes that job extremely easy. And last one. Number eight. Domain registration. Just max it out, man. Be safe. He goes on to say, you know, every year some big brand surprises themselves and get reported because their domain expired. Yeah, don't be that guy whose domain name expired or whose hosting expired or whatever it is. Max it out. Now,
I will say this. There were some mixed reviews. Some people were saying that, you know, if you maxed out your domain registration, then it had a higher impact in regards to SEO and your rankings. I don't think so. I would think it has a little. And the recent, think about you. It's like if you knew, I don't know, you're a big shoe guy, right? You knew the shoe store had a 10-year lease and some other shoe store had a one-year lease and you're kind of fostering the same relationship with them. You might ask, and you knew this. Of course, that's not typical information you would know. You might ask them, so why don't you only have a one-year lease? Are you guys planning on moving? Are you, you know, are you serious? Whereas the 10-year, like you just have no doubts. Like they may fold up shop and disappear, but they're serious about what they're doing. So I think it probably has, I don't think it has as much impact as, you know, all the hoopla has been about. I think it does have an impact because just logically, anybody who's registered for 10 years is not kidding around. I don't know. I mean, I get that and I somewhat agree to that. By the way, that's going to go away because it's like 10 bucks a year. Well, exactly. And that was Matt's argument. It was like, dude, a year on the internet is actually a long time. Yeah. And so, you know, whether it's one year, five years, 10 years, as long as it's active is what's important. And so we're just talking about staying active. And so that's why I encourage you to register it out. A lot of this, especially if you know this is what you're going to be doing, then. Just max it out. Yeah, max it out. That gives me a to-do, by the way. So punch in the face to Tom, Tom Schmitzman, 8SEO, Cleanse and Recharge Ideas. Great article, great post. We'll share that on Facebook
and Twitter. And hit us up and let you think about it. Cool. Do we have any what? No what news today. No what? All right. So that wraps up our podcast. We did the potatoes. We did the meat of the podcast. We went over nine things that should be reviewed on your website to cleanse it and- Eight things. Is it eight? Yeah. I just made up one. Okay. So number nine would be graphics. Yeah. Get out of my head. I was going to say your design. Yeah. But yeah, make sure that your design is suitable for your target audience. Yeah. Right? Maybe your target audience is, I don't know, a baby boomer, female. I got a great example. So we got a client who came to us with an actual application. It's a medical application. The client's docresponse.com. Came to us with an application and we did the marketing and the website design and actually a lot of the behind the scenes, most of the behind the scenes stuff. And so we got this product and it's ready to go. It's actually got an app. And now the pitch is different. The app was designed, what we did was designed to get to the end users. To get you, people who visit the site, to go through a specific process. To come to the site, check out your symptoms, and then get a diagnosis. Right. Designed specifically for that purpose. And it's very good. And we have like a 30% completion rate. Somebody types in symptom checker, lands on our webpage. They go through up to 44 questions is the longest questionnaire. 30% of them do it. Yeah. It's unheard of, right? And it's because we were so focused on getting people through the process. We did a really good job of that. The questions are simple. It's clear that they're going to get a good diagnosis and they do. It's actually really accurate too. So now the company has gone through a shift. It's probably not going to make a large amount of money.
It could, but it's probably its target isn't to make a large amount of money off of end users, but to sell this to like healthcare companies, you know, United Healthcare or something like that. So in that context, the look and feel is all wrong. Yeah. Right. It's just totally wrong. It's not made for to present just random information that's related to healthcare. It's meant to guide people down a certain path. One particular path. So we'll be reworking that entire site because the focus has changed. So that's. That's one of the cleansing and recharging. You have to stay consistent with your focus. Make sure your design, make sure your color scheme, make sure your layout complements what your, what your objective is. Your objective is to get people to sign up, make it easy to sign up. It shouldn't be difficult. So, um, and, and that's, that's really it. That's number nine. Number nine. So there were nine tips. It's always good to make me right after the mistake. Um, so that was the potatoes. We, that was the meat. We've already done the potatoes. Thank you guys for tuning in. You guys have, you guys and gals have made us the most popular internet marketing podcast on iTunes, on the known planet, on this continent and many other continents. On this side of the Mason Dixon. That, on both sides of the Mason Dixon. Thank you guys very much for tuning in. Until the next podcast, my name's Chris Burris. I'm Charles Hulis. Bye-bye for now.
