Questions this episode answers

How should I test landing page button colors?

Run one color against a constant control color for 30 days, then swap in a new color against the same control for another 30 days. Whichever color converts best in each period guides your adjustment. Your button should also contrast with the overall page design so it stands out.

Should I remove navigation from SEO landing pages the same way I would for paid landing pages?

Not necessarily. For paid traffic, removing navigation makes sense because you are paying for each click and want one action. For SEO-optimized pages that rank organically, keeping navigation available gives users who landed on a secondary-intent page a way to find what they actually need, which also improves the experience for Google users.

What is the best way to incentivize a newsletter sign-up call to action?

Give something of clear value in exchange. Examples from the episode include offering free information on getting a hard money loan, a 5% discount on a purchase, or a coupon for free donuts and free coffee at the next visit. People are reluctant to share their email without a tangible reason.

How long should a split test run before I evaluate results?

The hosts recommend at least two weeks, driving as much traffic as your budget allows. Running a test for only one day with around 20 visitors does not produce enough data. They also suggest creating an annotation in analytics marking the start date, what you tested, and what the control and variable were.

In their words

no matter what type of online marketing you're doing, whether it's SEO, whether it's pay-per-click, whether it's some email marketing, whether it's some video marketing, whether it's content marketing, whatever you're doing, you have to test it and measure it.

Charles Lewis

if you don't have that feedback loop between the changes in the testing you're making and the actual results that are happening for the business, then you're going to miss it.
