Article spinning and paid link schemes are risky and short-lived SEO tactics; Google's Panda and Penguin updates directly targeted these strategies, and sustainable SEO requires quality links and inbound marketing.
Short answer is no. Long answer is hell no.
If you can stomach the bad audio...we have a powerful algorithm cataclysm. We discuss backlinks, article spinnning and SEO. We also discuss link sculpting and it's pros and cons on your SEO efforts. No. Google's second Panda update specifically targeted sites using spun articles to build links, and the Penguin update further penalized such tactics. The hosts say the same effort is better spent creating real value through blogging, podcasting, and earning genuine links.
The seven steps from a Chris Warren SEO Moz article are: understand your link profile, learn what makes a good link, map the path Googlebot takes through your site, no-index low-value thin content pages, almost never change your URLs, set up SEO monitoring with alerts, and embrace inbound marketing.
According to the episode, link sculpting refers to how a site is structured so that Googlebot enters through the homepage and indexes other pages based on the sculpting, site map, and robots file. Knowing and controlling that path ensures the right pages get crawled and indexed.
remember, bottom line, if you're creating a good experience for the Google user, you get Google will like you and, or love you.

Google just banned them because they were buying paid links for their clients. And so not only do they cut the index, they're side.

Hi, and welcome to the SEO Podcast, Unknown Seekers, owner of your file. I am Charles Lewis, your initialist. We're a field week because we're actually doing our podcast a little bit to really to airing in and watching. Thanks, man. Charles had an event this morning that went good. Went well. Went great, man. My daughter's award ceremony. She's graduating from the fourth. Woo. And she raked the horse, bought it on from trucks. Shout out to my people. Shout out. That's a good word. Punch in the face. Just don't call CPS. This ain't seen what I've got. So, yeah, good job. Um, yeah. Okay. We're having a few maybe glitchy details here. Hopefully the audio is coming out pretty good. Uh, you know what? Remember, your friendly, local, neighborhood, Tess and Snatchers, and Beard Deuce, and sitting in front of some sort of tweetable, tweeting-capable device, anything, just right now, hashtag SEO Podcast, 150. 150. Not even 50. 150. 150. 150. Uh, and then include eWebstat notice. Um, remember the new segment last, the algorithm cataclysm. Mmm. Oh, that's good. I like that. Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha. Yeah. That just... And, uh, Charles is presenting the algorithm cataclysm. Um, yeah, so what we want to do in this section is really cover the latest algorithm update. And so, last time, um, we talked about the algo changes, and a portion of that was the, the Google pick, which they did, it's affected and links, so there are ways to recover from that, and we'll get into the cataclysm a little bit later. And there are ways to do good SEO relationship to, uh, to that penguin update, so. Definitely. Excellent. Um, a little bit of news. Actually, first tip from previous podcasts. It says, tune in to the SEO rapper. Yes. For an entertaining way to stay on top of the latest internet marketing trends. Yeah, but I released the, uh, the Google algo changes. Um, that's the new SEO rapper. Go check it out. Post a comment. Hear it, you know, help me. If
you don't know how to find that, you need only go to theseorapper.com. Nice and simple. News, I saw it actually docked with the space station. Yeah, that was pretty cool. That is pretty cool. Uh, the American Indian is getting, uh, us back up, back and forth, space station. Yeah, they said they had, like, a thousand pounds of food. Wow. And that's freeze-dried. Yeah. That's a lot. Mm-hmm. Why is it really a thousand pounds when there's no one is there? Yeah. Also known as hero. Mm-hmm. Uh, and I thought this was awesome. So, there was a dude who was working on a startup who lived at the AOL once. Mm-hmm. While he was working on a startup. Lived there. Lived there. Like, behind the scenes, covertly, identified that the security guards frequent. Mm-hmm. Slept there, woke up early to the gym. Wow. Took an hour at the cafeteria. Wow. Just closed. Thing. And then pounded out code all day. His name is, uh, isn't that crazy? His name is- That's almost awesome. His name is Aaron's. And, uh, the way he actually got in was, uh, oh, I printed something else. He didn't work there? No, he didn't work there. He was on the Start X program. So, this is like an entrepreneurial program. I assumed this was an employee. Yeah, no. He had a badge, and the badge continued to work after the program was over, and that's when he was there. Um, there's AOL who was, uh, who said- Wow. And I had printed it out. I don't have it with me. Uh, he said, yeah, we're always striving to encourage entrepreneurship. We just didn't realize well it was working. Apparently, Apple TVs are going to come out. We always kind of, kind of theorize the next thing to come out. Um, and, uh, Facebook has the worst IPO in a decade. Well, and, and that's how I almost expect it. I mean, because it's it. It was so high. It's funny. They went from, they went from the best to the worst in
the same week. Yeah. And so, yeah. And, and, and what really sucks is, um, is not their fault. And issue, education and things like that, which was expected. This is the highest, you know, IPO. Still, they should have anticipated those products. A little more, yeah. Um, we got an email, and this is from Ibrahim Kudru. Uh, if I'm saying that correctly, I'm probably. Uh, it's saying up on your, it's going to 1.30. It said, iTunes reviews to you guys where we are in Australia. I also took a stab at the iPhone because both of you were talking about taking screenshots. Um, he left us a review on iTunes in November 24, 2011. Did read it on air. I'm going to hold this up for anybody looking at the video. You will see your review on there, and there are red check marks. That is because I reviewed. That's actually, the check mark is the actual blood as I removed the tear. I'm going to take you. I'm going to take you. Um, yeah. I'll take control over your blood. Uh, and his, uh, he, he loved a little link glove. His car detail, I learned one detail. I think we even did a, uh, one of that one. Yeah. Uh, I'm still on your podcast and have a little, many people prove we have addressed that, but no one has really said that the audio level has always been low. Uh, so we'll work on getting that a little bit higher. Um, did I have anything else? I don't think. Um, no, I had, uh, I wanted to punch in the face to, uh, Greg Scott. That's, uh, at Greg San Diego. Uh, view. It was really a bit, and, uh, I will be about listening to shout out and give you the name recognition. So, so, so charge it, not the heart. Appreciate your support. Yeah. All right. So, uh, that's for the Gino time limit. I don't, I feel, uh, I feel contributed. All right. So, uh, I want to address this question
from Scott Moses. He emailed, um, this was actually, uh, a few hours, well, last, about an hour ago. Um, and he says, um, hi, guys, cast of London a lot. I have a question about backlinks and article spinning. He was reading, uh, Pat Flynn's blog about his backlinking strategy. Long story short, spend a whole bunch of having website domain up, uh, once I'm above articles, free domain, the free domains point to your main page. That's the explanation of article spinning. Um, and the goal being, the goal being to build your own quality backlinks. It's a long process. It's kind of long, but, um, here's the post. And he put a link post. We're not sure if we'll repost it or not because of, uh, of that. And, um, and then you go on and ask, you know, the strategy, am I in charge? Trouble in the future. I hate to invest time. Blah, blah, blah, blah. Google games, bandit, lose. Is it worth it? Short answer is no. Long answer is hell no. I'll be, I think it probably could help. It would help short term. Yeah. It would help short term. The reason I say is because Google is still making changes. Algorithm changes are still happening right to this particular thing. They released Panda. The second version of Panda strictly targeted these sorts of sites where you post in the same articles and it's, then this content is spent and pointing, link it to the same site. That second Panda update three something was targeted directly at that. Uh, search engine land called it farmer. Um, that was the farmer update. Then they came back with the penguin update to catch all those bad links just for those sites that all the articles are posted on would even gather enough to be in regards to a link. Um, and then it would come back to bite you. And so, uh, yeah. I think, I think it's same effort. Find what you can do best blogging at. Yeah. Find places where you can actually
create value and bring links back to your, back to you. Um, start a podcast. Start, you know, start blogging on your own well and that the, the thing on your internal website, uh, within your website is done well. Uh, you know, focus on a little bit more of the basics and don't kind of get hung up on tricks and especially tricks. I know you're concerned. Hey, I could spend all of this time and it may take me 20 hours. It may take me 40 hours. And if it has great, if it actually bumps me to the top, that's worth it. And if I turn around tomorrow and Google makes a change and takes me off, then that 20 or 40 hours was wasted. It takes you like, uh, choir heard about our choir. And so I'm working in, um, um, agency, they were doing the, I think they were marketing for like done. They got, who was in, out to my punch in the face to my boy, uh, Mike King. He works there. Um, I mean, big SEO guy, contributed a lot to the community. Dude's on it. He really knows the stuff. And so he just recently became the, uh, head of in an inbound marketing there. Hopefully to kind of get them out of this hole. They're in Google just banned them because they were. They're buying paid links for their clients. And so not only do their content index, their side. Wow. Yeah, that's huge. I acquired a big company. Uh, situation. So, um, yeah. Matter of fact, content goes into, it's called, uh, seven achievable steps for great SEO. Um, after the penguin update and review on Facebook, but it covers, uh, I'm not going to get into it. It covers links and things like that. You can hang one up to kind of, or maintain your ranking. By the way, as a note, we saw nothing. We saw changes in placement for our sites, uh, and the sites that we're in charge of, uh, at all. So, um, that's
a new one thing, uh, then you'll continue the result. Remember, bottom line, if you're creating a good experience for the Google user, you get Google will like you and or love you. Yeah, because I'm in, I'm in analytics. I haven't known any, any, any drop off, any customer complaints. Right. You know, any phone calls or phone submissions down or any of that. So, so yeah, uh, do it right. Boom. Boom. There's our tip. Do it right. And, oh, so, so the first one, seven achievable steps for great SEO after a penguin update. Uh, this is by Chris Warren, uh, SEO Moz. Um, first one he says is, um, understand your link profile. I think that is a great, uh, step, um, uh, essential knowledge. Um, and then, you know, some ways to do this is, um, uh, great linking to you using, um, how long they've been linking to you. And so definitely how many links you have and what type of links you have. If you have a low quality links coming to you, then you, um, you can't, you can't necessarily get rid of them because they're to you, but you can shift your energy on maybe, um, if links come to. So that way you won't suffer so bad from having a low quality link coming to you. Um, number two, learn what makes a good link. I thought this was a, uh, a great, uh, a great, uh, brands and sites, people like that. Um, they exist on pages that lots of other sites link to. Right. So now, um, they, these links provide, uh, values in the content page and they usually aren't replicated, uh, many times linking on. And so I think that's a pretty good one. Uh, definitely learn what, what types of links to go after. In a, in a very understandable sense, a website that you respect is a website that you, who's in your website that's linked to your site. Yeah. Pretty straightforward. Uh, I'm sure there's some nuances, you know, you know, there are
going to be better ones and worse ones based on, based on, uh, page rank, things like that. Um, number two, map path, it's pretty huge. It goes into, um, site map issue, link sculpting. You know, on Instagram, you put Google would usually enter the site through the homepage and then begin to index the other pages based on the sculpting, how to enter your site, what your robot file says. And so, um, know the path, know the path that Googlebot is taking and make sure you, the pages that you need them to take, um, are, are there, are present, are broken. And have the proper 301s. Exactly. Yeah. Load fast so they won't have any issues. Coding's good so they can index problems. Um, number four, know about every page type and no index, the low value ones is key. And one of the things he mentioned on here was, um, um, sites that have thin content. And so you have a page on the site and it's, you know, a paragraph of text. Right. And, um, and you're trying to rank for this page. And so that text is already over-optimized and the whole page is over-optimized and there's really no value there. That's thin content. Um, according to the article, and I agree, um, we should, we should, you know, follow. And so that way Google won't index it and they won't try to, you know, value your site based on that page. Right. Instead, they'll overlook it and, and, and you direct them to more of your high quality pages. Um, and in the meantime, improve that page. You know, get some more content, you know, images, video, and all the stuff you need to make a page, um, have some value. And then, um, number five, we put, um, almost never change your URLs. Sometimes it's necessary to get a new system, you, or something like that just requires you to, um, make sure it's if you do that. But even then, according to the article, it's a great amount of respect,
for a better word. And so if possible, um, don't change. Um, number six, um, set up SEO monitoring. Um, this is great. This is something that we do here, um, as part of our tracking to make sure our, or not only ranking for me. Um, in analytics, you can set up monitoring and get an alert that say if, if visits drop over a certain period of time. And so, it just, that Google has available to fix. So, set up some SEO monitoring for your target phrases, figure out what's working. And that way, you can get an alert if it drops. That means something's going down, or change, or, or something happened. The page got hacked. Anything. Exactly. And so, at least you'll know. If you don't know, then you can't fix it. Um, number seven was, uh, embrace our marketing. And, um, and I think, um, and I, I totally concur. Inbound marketing is really a progression from it. Um, especially these changes, because, uh, a lot of people here inbound, I think, social. Right. Blogging and things like that. And, and that, and that is a part of it. It's also a part of SEO. I think it's addressing not only the traffic coming to your site, but what that traffic is doing when they get to your site. Are they purchasing? Are they searching? Are they going through multiple pages? Are they sharing information? So, look at that information, and make sure you, when you optimize, that you keep that in, and make sure that you can get the best result for the people who are visiting your site. Right. And so, um, those were his seven steps. If you do all those, um, um, you can survive a Penguin update. Um, it was great. I, um, most of the stuff we, we already do. Some of the other stuff, we, we, we, internal changes. Yep. That we have to do, um, in order to clients up and stay relevant ourselves. So, y'all post that on Facebook, we'll tweet it out, and, uh,
you guys, what you think about? Podcast One B. One Fitty. One Fitty. Wow. That is awesome. I was going to bring balloons. I get to bring, they're going to be like 50, three of them. Yeah, we're over three times. That's pretty cool. And that, you guys, uh, we've got a good listenership. Um, you guys use for us. Uh, you know, we increase any links you guys give back to us. We really appreciate, motivates us to continue doing this, to, to, uh, a good job on this podcast and getting you good internet marketing information. Um, we are the most popular as an internet marketing podcast, because guys out there, if you're listening, we are pointing at different areas of the camera screen. Um, 60 countries, uh, 64 countries per week. Uh, any, any blank stare news? Um, well, yeah. I got blank stare. We, we actually, it's blank stare. Oh, that was cold. Super cold. That was, yeah, really cold. Yeah, this blank, is that, is that Zuckerberg? Uh, for, for PO. And, and, and, and I think, this is my personal logic, knowing that it's a price and, and, and almost preparing for the drop that happened. And everybody else who jumped on the bandwagon and did everything, who lost money, yeah, blank stare. Like the guy read the article this morning for the awards. The guy, two of his paychecks and invested and lost. And, wow, I didn't even know how that worked and how that happened, but. He wouldn't, he couldn't have lost at all. He was, he was a third tent or whatever. Unless he was dumb and was like, again, when it was low, selling it. I mean, it's low a couple times up here pretty quickly. Um, again, you have been listening to the most popular song. I really appreciate you. Until the next podcast, Chris Burris. Until next. Bye bye for now.
