Last-Minute SEO Strategies for the Holiday SeasonIt's the holiday season! Now is the time to zero in on just what you need to do to make your SEO work best for you during the holidays.
The five strategies from the article by Dave Davies are: optimize Google My Business, update page titles and descriptions with target keywords, reverse keyword focus toward long-tail and local phrases, hijack top-ranking directories by claiming listings in them, and optimize on-page content for keywords already ranking near the top of page two or bottom of page one.
Long-tail and local phrases like 'Echo Shoes Portland' have less competition, so a site can rank for them much faster than broad terms. The episode uses a Babe Ruth base-hit analogy: going for lower-hanging fruit gets you on base quickly and moves you toward bigger ranking gains over time.
Google My Business verifies that a business is a legitimate entity, reinforces trust with Google, and enables the knowledge graph to appear in search results. Without a verified Google My Business listing, a business is unlikely to show a knowledge graph when users search for it.
If the top-ranking results for a target phrase are directory listings such as Yelp, you should claim and optimize your listing in those directories. Because directories dominate those phrases, getting into the top 10 of a directory is faster than outranking the directory itself.
if you do a search for the phrase that you want to place well for and the top three listings are some sort of directories, you probably should make sure you're in those directories.
